At what age is blankets safe for toddlers?
« on: February 15, 2007, 18:28:40 pm »
I am really nervous about giving my toddler (19 mo) a blanket. We have the heat up at night and he has really thick footed pj's. I was just wondering when everyone started giving blankets (pillows too). He is not sleeping in one place in his crib yet, he is always all over the place and I am worried that he will suffocate from it. Is he old enough? He has never been cold at night so that isnt an issue, I guess I just dont know if he should have one.... Anybody have any idea?
Thanks

Hi there -
I started giving my son a blanket and pillow when he was about 10 months old. He moves around a lot in the bed, and I'm not particularly concerned about suffocation because I know he could move the blanket if he needed to.
If you're worried about him being cold - you could put him in a gro-bag or sleeping sac.
Or, if you want to try a blanket, just give him a thin receiving blanket that's lightweight.
I imagine though that a 19 month old will be just fine! :)

I agree with MDHmommy.  DS is 20 months and sleeps in thick footed PJ's but we still give him a lightweight, fleece blanket and a flat pillow.  I would not give him a large comforter but a small blanket should be fine.  Most of the time it ends up wadded up in a corner or on the floor anyways!   ;D ;D

My los have always had blankets and nothing else - and, against convention, they have both always slept on their fronts! Have never had a problem with them going over their heads, like a pp, the blankets normally end up at the foot of the bed, and the girls at the top!

I am in Canada.....we use blankets from day 1. In the winter I would put jammies on them then over sized fleecy overalls...for extra warmth if their blankets were kicked off.

MDHmommy & swiper: Thanks for mentioning the pillows! DS (almost 11mo) has lately been using one of his stuffed animals as a pillow (we let him sleep with 4! :o ), so I'd been debating getting him a little pillow. Good to know others have...

It definately has taken a while for me to be ready, but he has his first blanket right now during his nap. And yes, I am watching the monitor like a hawk ;) It is only a thin receiving blanket, but it is something! I think it is more me that isnt ready for all these little milestones (blanket, new bed etc.) rather than him!
