10 mo. old still not liking food
« on: March 15, 2007, 16:06:18 pm »
Hi!  My daughter is 10 months old.  She started solids at 7 mo.  She still wasn't interested in them at that point but I wanted her to start practicing.  She is a breastfed baby.  She is currently nursing 5x's and I am getting ready to drop to 4x's.  She is eating two 'meals' a day, usually 45 min. to 1 hr. after nursing.  She eats maybe 1 1/2 tbsp. at each sitting.  I have also give her cereal puffs, which she puts in her mouth and spits back out.  Cheerios, same thing.  She liked the zweiback toast the first time and now she throws it on the floor.  The same with wagon wheels.  I have also tried pancakes, not too thrilled; banana-okay; crust of italian bread and pizza crust- loved!  And that is it so far.  I am not sure what to do.  Should i keep trying and wait to intro third meal.  I am pretty sure that by this point my son was eating three meals.  And he was a horrible eater and still is.  (he is only 29 pounds at 4 1/2 yrs old!)  I know I was only nursing him in morning and night at his first birthday.  And advice would be great!  I would love to have her weanted totally from breast at 14 months when we are all going to an all-inclusive in Mexico, but it doesn't seem possible since she is hardly eating anything.

I can't post for long as I am cooking Sam's dinner but I would say at 10 months with her lack of solids appetite it's OK to increase the priority you place on solids in her day.
By that I mean that after a really good bf she's unlikely to be hungry only 45 minutes later. I am obviously a bf mod and place a huge emphasis on milk as the primary source of nutrition up until 12 months but at her age she's ready to perhaps have one meal 'solids first'. I would perhaps do lunch solids first then bf an hour or so later.
Some people feel comfortable recommending solids first for all meals from around 9 months. Although obviously you still need to keep an eye on milk consumption.

I would also say have a think about the way you present family meals in general e.g. eat your meal with her, share it with her. Give her stuff off your plate and show how much you enjoy eating (apologies if this is super obvious).
