What Avent teat size should we use?
« on: March 10, 2007, 12:59:30 pm »
Hannah currently feeds using the Avent no 1 teat.  She's always been a bit of a sicky baby.  She manages to take about 4oz in about 15mins (with a few burps in there too  ;)  My question is should we try moving her to a no 2 teat?  Could that possibly help with the spit up or will it only make matters worse?  I was wondering whether her not having to suck so hard to get the milk might mean she's not so sick.  On the other hand I'm wondering if the faster milk flow will just mean she takes in more air and pukes up more.  Anyone have any experience of this?

TIA

We started our DS on the #2 teats as we found that he battled to get much milk out of the #1 flow.

I would say that if Hannah is happy with the flow and is drinking so well so I would not change it.  She will let you know when she is ready to go up to the next size up.

You may find that changing the teat now will mean that she will drink a lot quicker and in turn will mean that she will probably spit up a lot more.

Hi
I have a 9 week old that has been on size 2 for 4 weeks and is a sicky baby and i didn't know whether to change to 3 hole or not for the same dillema.
Freya is sick after her feed and sometimes for upto 2 hours after/ she takes 6oz every 4 hours and sleeps for 11 hours at night. So i think if they are satisfied nd not taking too long to feed leave as it is.

I agree try the size 2 and see if it helps. It may make her spit more or even sputter (per lack of a better turm..) for the first few feeds, but she will get the milk more easily. If the spitting does get worse however, I would say go back.
Another option is to try the try flow, as you can control how fast the flow is depending on the feed. I found with DD some feeds she needed a faster flow then others, like evening and morning feeds, and it was a pain to keep switching nipples.

We tried Hannah with the number 2 teat this morning and she did fine.  The next feed we used a no 2 again and she was a little sick for a while afterwards but I don't think it was related to the teat size.  I think we'll stick with the number 2 now.
Thanks for your help.

I used to use the Avent bottles until I discovered Dr Brown's wide bottles. I know you may not want to change bottles because it can be a pain in the b--t but it may help with the spit up and gas. You will have a different baby.

In my experience, the Avent bottles leak as you change the teat and increase the oz's. I hate those bottles. They apparently are supposed to help with the gas. But, I have not seen a difference. Only now, I have noticed that difference with my dd.

Or it could be the formula that you are using. Did you consider changing formulas ???

My two cents

I really enjoy using the avent bottles.  But I do find that they leak when the top is tightened to far.  Usually by loosening the teat you can stop the leak.

When my LO seemed frustrated with his bottle (e.g. he would swat and shake it), I introduced a larger nipple flow.  If no milk spilled out of the corners of his mouth, I kept the larger nipple flow.  If it did leak out, I went back to the slower nipple flow size.
