Sippy Cup
« on: March 27, 2007, 02:05:59 am »
Ok so I introduced a sippy cup early on with my ds and he did pretty well with it but I made the mistake of getting busy during the day and did not keep giving it to him. So now Ive been working on getting him used to it again and all he is doing is chewing on it. I literally have to have a bottle on hand to switch to the sippy cup so he understands how to get the milk out of the cup... otherwise he chews on it and waves it around. Any advice? I know its my fault for not using it frequently so he doesnt remember what to do with it, but I am trying hard to remedy the situation :)

Curious as to how old your LO is. My LO is 9 1/2 months old, and he now uses the sippy cup during the day. However, although he knows how to use both the spouted and straw sippy cup his intake has decreased substantially since introducing the sippy cup (from 24-28 oz per day to 16-20 oz per day). Not sure whether to keep presenting or revert back to bottle for day feed???

As far as your ds, how old is he? Could you try taking the valve out at first until he gets the idea again. This worked for us when introducing. Also, what type of sippy cup are you using?

Taygensmom:
Just wondering if your LO uses the sippy cup for all milk feeds during the day or just water/juice during meals?  My DD is a little over 9  months too and she uses the straw cup all day for her meals, water, etc. but still gets her milk from bottles.  I also tried Playtex sippy and she can use that too but anytime I have tried to give her milk in these other methods (not bottle) she doesn't want it.  Well, she'll drink some of it and like you, the intake isn't a lot and so I probably just give up too soon.

Maybe you can try getting your LO use to using the sippy w/ water or juice first before trying to do milk.  I've read/heard that milk is a tricky thing.  For example, my LO will drink just about anything from her sippy or straw but whenever I put milk in there it's like she doesn't want anything to do with it.  So it might not be that he doesn't know how to use it... it might just be he doesn't want what's inside :-)

I give him milk in the sippy at lunch, 1 snack, and supper. I give water in sippy sometimes between meals. Intake varies from 6 oz to 9 oz per day via sippy and then the 12 oz. consistently via bottle (never refuses bottle!!). Do you think I should persevere or back off?

I do worry he's not getting enough milk, as I'm not sure what the minimum recommendations are. I do try to give him lots of cheese/yogurt to help with the calcium intake, and he is definately not underweight (he can really eat!!!). Any suggestions?

So far it hasnt mattered what I put in the sippy. I made the mistake of not being consistent with offering it to him so now he just uses it as a toy. He is 11 months

As a breastfeeding mum, dd gets milk from my boobs and water from a valveless sippy cup. Milk and solid feeds are very separate for us, so she has water with her 'meals' and breastfeeds inbetween. It seems fine to me that at this young age they still have their milk (formula, cows, EBM, whatever) from a bottle, and water in a cup at mealtimes to wash the solids down!

Yay!! I had luck this morning finally. We went to BRU and got a bunch of different styles of sippys and he worked with one of the take and toss sippys successfully this morning :-)
