White noise
« on: March 14, 2007, 18:28:56 pm »
I was just wondering if anyone uses white noise CD for naps, bedtime and if you find that it made a difference. I ordered one last week and waiting to see if it helps, THe one that i ordered is "for crying out loud". Also how dark does the room need to be for naps?

Hello!!  We use a small desk fan in ds's room for naps and bedtime.  We run it on high.  We also play a lullabye CD on repeat.

In terms of darkness, all lo's are different.  We use a dark window curtain for ds's naps.  It does not completely darken the room, however enough to keep the sunlight out.

HTH!

We use a sound screen that I ordered on-line. It sounds like a fan w/o any air coming out. I also wonderd how dark to make the room for naps. I thought too dark would confuse them between day and night time and make it hard to nap anywhere where it was not as dark. I have  been pulling her room darkening shade almost all the way down so there is just a bit of light coming through, but I wonder if I am making it too dark?? I look forward to seeing what others do.

We used a CD that had different types of white noise on it including 'sounds from within the womb' and a washing machine!

The washing machine track worked the best but all of them did ok as long as they were played really loud. Not sure why the loudness worked but it did.

I tried to use cd at the beginning but she took much better to a fan. So we have a fan going for all naps and all night.

I've been using a white noise CD from day one, so it's hard to say if it's helped my lo or not.  For the most part, though, she's been a pretty good sleeper.  I have the white noise going all day and night during her sleep times.

My girlfriend was having problems w/ getting her son to sleep so she ordered the same CD I had and she says it's helped a little.

As for the amount of light, I always completely close the vertical blinds.  The room doesn't get completely dark, but it's pretty dim.

Hello KMG -

We use a white noise machine for ourselves, actually - DH & I can't sleep without some white noise in the room.  I recommend a machine over a CD, as the CD's are short tracks that repeat, and you can start to hear patterns in the noise that can keep some folks awake.  The machines are pricey but well worth the investment - we have the SleepMate, we use it every night.

I keep Bridget's room darkened for naps, but not completely dark.  Her daddy was conditioned to sleep in a completely dark room when he was a baby, now he can't sleep at all if there's even a sliver of light in the room, so we're trying to avoid that for Bridget.  I have blue curtains doubled with black sheers, which cuts a lot of the light and gives a nice comforting glow.  We also make closing the curtains part of the "going to sleep" routine, which helps set the stage.  Your baby might need it darker, or tolerate lighter - everyone's different, try out some different light levels and see which one s/he is most comfortable in.

Good luck!
'Nuff said,

For white noise we use an air filter/purifier kept on low.  DH likes to use one when he sleeps and it has been great for our LO because we can work around the house and it muffles all noise!

Ella's room has always been kept fairly dark with just a roller blind.  During the day it isn't pitch black, you can still tell it's daylight outside.

I got the CD today and i don't think she likes it. I previously tried and intrumental baby cd and she kept waking up. Now i tried the white noise CD at her last nap and she woke 20 minutes later crying (after she had 3 great hour and a half naps) and settled her to bed and again 20 minutes later woke up. I went in turned it off settled her in 5 minutes and she has been sleeping since. So i am wondering if because she was never use to it it bothers her. She is 14 weeks and i guess used to sleepin in silence i just thought that it might help her resettle at night when needed. Guess not because she had neer woken up besdies when i played these CD twice. Oh well.

My question about the white noise CD's and lullaby CD's is that they may get dependant on it?  I play a CD of the crashing of waves during naps and a lullaby CD at night (so he can tell the difference between naptime and bedtime)  well, that's the idea anyway.

But I wonder if/when we travel he won't sleep without them??

We have used a fan on half blast since DD came home. We keep it on all the time. She still sleeps fine when we are visiting family. As for light, we have a lamp on for her naps and a blue night light (it's part of her monitor) for night. She also naps and sleeps fine without those as well.

We just bring the CD's with us.  Better to be safe than sorry.  ;)

Most places you go will have a cd player...like family etc. Or you could just bring a small one along.

I have found that with the CD their is a skip when it goes to repeat and i think this is what wakes her up, i only use it if i know there will be lot sof noise in the house or outside. Giving summer is approaching i am affraid of the noise outside with music, people BBQ ect as we live in a townhouse. I might invest in a sound machine if i see she needs it

We have the Conair Infant Sound Machine and it is fabulous!  Volume can be turned up so it is VERY loud, and it has about 12 different sound options - white noise, heartbeat, waterfall, etc etc etc.   :)
