drink after solids cause thirsty?
« on: April 03, 2007, 10:04:24 am »
Okay so we're starting to head to a 6 month old routine.  I will do bf as usual when he wakes and then solids an hour or so later.  BUT do I need to give him a little breastfeed after the solids to wash it down?  Do they get thirsty after the solids?

Thanks Tarri

Hi Tarri

I introduced water in a cup at mealtimes when I introduced solids.

Have fun  :D

I introduced water too, but apparently breastmilk can be as thirst quenching so is up to you really. Its a great way to get them using a sippy cup when you introduce water although most of it goes down the chin at first!!  ;D

Personally, I would do the water after the solids rather than the breastmilk. If they aren't too keen on the solids (which many aren't at first since it's so new) they might not eat as much once they know breastmilk is coming after.  Both mine learned to really enjoy water from a regular cup in small sips with their solids.  If you offer him the water in a regular cup, fill it pretty high with water and tip it just enough that his lips touch the water in the cup.  His head will not be tipped back at all.  He will try to suck it out so you don't have to tip it (and risk choking him).  When he's had enough, all he has to do then is move his head away and you don't spill.  Have fun! :)

Hi girls, I followed your advice and offered him a sippy with water after eating and he took it, YAY!  So I'll stick with that and see how it goes.

Thanks again,Tarri
