Sippy cup HELP!
« on: April 06, 2007, 00:41:15 am »
I've been introducing a sippy cup with water to my son since he was 6 months old.  He now takes sips like he should but then he spits it out!  Does he not like water?  But then he does it again and again.  I've tried apple juice and then he takes a sip and makes a face and doesn't try it again so I definitely don't think he likes apple juice.  Any suggestions?  I can't figure out what to do.

Have you tried offering your DS some Formula or EBM in a sippy to see if he will drink that from it?

I have tried in the past and he wouldn't but I haven't tried recently.  I'll give it a shot!

I think part of the reason they learn to use a straw so quickly is by watching us drink out of straws and wanting to do the same. They just love to try to do things they see adults doing. DD learned how to drink out of a regular cup pretty quickly too. Now if only we could work faster on learning how to hold the cup steady without spilling...

I have tried straw and regular sippies, and he can totally get the liquid out.  It's not the issue at all.  He grabs the cup, puts it to his mouth, tilts his head, then the liquid comes out, and he spits it out!  Every single time.  Today I tried his formula and he did the same thing!  What can i do????  Is this just practice?  I mean I doubt he hates every single type of liquid out there.  I'm thinking of trying cows milk.  He'll be 11 months old in two weeks, is it too early?

hi there,
our Ds never liked juice as it always seemed too concentrated. What we did was add some to water and he loved it. (100mls h2o to 30mls ready to drink juice )Took a while for him to master the swallowing thing and the holding it himslef thing too but once he was liking the water and juice mix we slowly started to reduce the amount of juice every few days until it was just water. He now loves his water but every 3 months or so will go through a few days of refusing so we add a tiny bit if juice to entice him. He's not a fan of sweet things but the juice just adds enough of a flavour to interest him. HTH

I just started adding juice today (I added about a drop haha to a sippy).  I didn't give my DD juice until she turned 2!!!  What a change, but she would easily drink water (and still prefers it over juice).

He's goinng to be 11 months old on Monday and I plan on dropping a bottle then.  A lot of people have told me that when they dropped a bottle (went to 2 a day), the baby just drank water from their sippy.  I'll have to see if that's true.

hi carmellas mom
not sure on the whole dropping bottle thing. Ds is 11 months next thurs and we're on one bottle. Just kept phasing them out one by one, first the lunch time one then the afternoon one and then the breakfast one. The breakfast one took a few attempts as initially ds really cried so we didn't push it too much. Just made a point of having the bottle downstairs and then moved to a cup one day when he'd starting taking less ozs in this bottle. He always gave us a good indication of when it was time though as he reduced the amount of oz over a week or so. I'd say he'll hang onto the nighttime one though. Unfortunately he's beginning to see it as a comforter so maybe its time to get rid asap. Undecided about that one. HTH

That's exactly why I want to start getting rid of some bottles.  We're on 3 still.  When DD turned 11 months we were on 2 and going down to 1 in a week or two.  Then 12 months she was DONE.  She had no problems whatsoever and it was easy.  I think the older they get, the more they get that bond with it, so I'd like to get rid of it before the bond :)  Today with lunch I'm going ot put some formula in his sippy (something I've never done with him or DD, but he's just not liking it so maybe if its something he knows, he'll feel better).  Who knows at this point!

Thanks for the advice.  I'll continue to try.  He is sick right now so I hate to make major change during this week!

This is getting ridiculous.  I have tried everything!  He won't take a straw cup at all.  So now we are onto the Nuby ones with the soft spout.  He'll take a sip here or there, but not drink much at all.  Oh well.  We'll keep trying.  I'd like to start limiting him to 2 bottles a day but I can't when he won't take a sippy!

My problem is that my son doesn't drink from a bottle.  He only takes 6 ounces a DAY (and that includes the formula that is in his cereal!).  We just can't get him to eat.  Whether its teething, or what, I have no clue!  But he's been like this for the better part of 3 months.  His ped keeps telling me that he's fine.  It's driving me crazy.  He won't take a sippy, bottle.  He won't drink water, formula, juice, or whole milk.  I really don't know what else to do.
