4.5 month old still won't sleep through the night
« on: April 24, 2007, 13:27:02 pm »
Hi,
I'm pretty new here, this is only the second time I've posted - so bear with me!
My little boy who is almost 5 months old still can't seem to make it through the night for longer than 5 hrs. He won't take bigger feeds or more frequent feeds during the day, I've tried. I'm pretty sure it's due to hunger as he wakes at different times. Please does anyone have any advice on anything I can try to get him to 6/7am?

Typical day
7am - Get him up (he hates to eat straight away!)
730-8am - 6oz
8 - 9am - A
9am-10-1030am S

11am - 6/7oz
1120am - A
1pm - 2-230pm S

3pm - 6/7oz
320pm - A
5pm - 540pm S

540pm - A
7pm - 6/7oz
720pm - S

11pm - Dream feed 6/7oz

he will then wake 3, 4 or 5 hrs later sometimes twice a night. Sometimes he will settle back down if I go in and give him his dummy, other times he won't settle at all.

Any advice would be VERY welcome - after nearly 5 months of this I'm ready for a full nights sleep!

Thanks for your time.

Hi Amandajane,

Well, I have good news and bad news.  The good news is that your routine looks good and your day seems to be going well. That's great!! The bad news is, that there is a common misconception that babies are to sleep through the night at a certain age, with a certain amount of food etc etc etc. You'll get all sorts of advice from all sorts of peopl on how to get a baby to sleep through the night. However, while age and food do play a role, it's not the only role. Babies will also sleep through the night when they are developmentally ready. My ds slept through at 2 months, my niece at 4 months. He was breastfed, she was bottlefed. He's spirited, she's textbook.  Goes to show that the do things at their own pace.

My heart goes out to you and I know how tired you are. We have all been there, in fact I'm there right now. My son is 21 months and waking several times a night. Sheesh! But he's going through a lot of milestones and development right now so I just do what I have to do.

He'll start sleeping soon enough, it may seem like a long time now, but when he's 18 it won't have seemed so bad  ;)
