*********I'm new - help!**********
« on: April 25, 2007, 10:59:07 am »
Hi - I've been recommended this site to help me get to grips with my sons sleeping (or rather lack of sleep!) He sometimes naps in the day, anything from 1/2 hr to 3 hrs, and will usually sleep about 6 hrs at night. I'm not getting enough sleep to cope with everyday things now, I'm taking out on my partner, I don't have any time for myself (not even 5 mins!), and I'm getting exhausted and depressed. Jaden is 6 months now - where do I start to change things? And what's EASY?

Hi,
Don't be discouraged, I know it's hard when you're so tired to try to keep a positive outlook, but, don't worry, everyone here will help you as much as they can!   I'm only a newbie on this site, but I've been a BW since my now 4 yo daughter was born.  There's lots of helpful, more explanatory info on this site, but you're probably not able to leisurely read through everything...here goes a brief explanation.

EASY stands for Eat, Activity, Sleep, Your time.  It's a flexible routine, not a schedule.  It's a philosophy of child rearing and I am eternally grateful that I found!  The method was developed by Tracey Hogg, who wrote two books (The Baby Whisperer and The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems, get them if you can!!) and, basically, the most important thing to me about EASY is understanding that your baby is a whole little person who deserves respect and understanding.  Your baby will tell you what he needs, you just have to learn how he says it.

There are great sample routines in this forum, divided by age, so you can take a look at those to see what others in your LO's age range are doing.  If your DS is having trouble sleeping, it could be many things.  Off the top of my head, I'd say he's probably overtired, but it'd be helpful for you to post your normal day with all his eating, sleeping, activity times.  If he's all over the place, I know that will be hard to do, but just give a general idea and it will help the experts here know where you should start!

My DS is 7 mo tomorrow and here's how we do his day at home, daycare is sometimes another issue!:

Wake up and Eat: 7:00
Dress 7:30
Activity 7:40-9:00
Sleep 9-11/Eat 11
Activity 11:30-1:00
Sleep 1-3ish
Eat 3
Activity 3:30-5
Catnap 5-5:45ish
Activity 5:45-7
Eat 7
Bath, Bedtime routine 7:30-8

His times vary, he'll sometimes sleep until 8:00 or so on the weekend and I just adjust the rest of his day accordingly.  I feel like he sleeps too much for his age, but, if I try to keep him up, he gets cranky.  It's all about paying attention to their cues, sleepy cues, hungry cues, etc.  I'm going to stop now, because I've written a book and I don't know if I've even said anything helpful!  Post your day and then we can go from there.

Hang in there!!!
