Getting 7 week old to sleep on his own for naps
« on: April 25, 2007, 16:25:41 pm »
I am having the same problem with my 7 week old ds.  We started BW two weeks ago and have pretty much only mastered EASY--I can't seem to get him to sleep on his own.  I still nurse him down at night (one problem at a time) and he sleeps wonderfully.  He falls asleep before I can get him into the crib.

But naps are another problem!  His A time is very short--sometimes he starts yawning within 10 minutes.  I am very vigilant about getting him to be before he gets overtired--usually no later than 30 minutes after the end of E.  I start by closing the blinds, changing and swaddling him, sitting in the chair, standing by the crib--all by the book.  I have recently started adding time for him in his crib looking at his mobile at the beginning of the process to make him more comfortable in his crib while he is not asleep.

At any rate--he starts to cry within 30 seconds of being laid in the crib and it progressively gets worse.  Pat/shh doesn't work--I have to bend over the crib (using a stepstool, I am very short) and put my face close to his face and sing to him to get him to stop crying.  Then as soon as I stand up he starts in again.  Just this morning I did that for an hour--a couple of times he even went to sleep and woke up after 2 minutes.  I finally got so tired and frustrated I picked him up to rock him and he wouldn't even calm down then.  After all that, I fed him 30 minutes early and put him straight to bed after a diaper change--he was so tired he was falling asleep on the changing table.  He has been asleep for 40 minutes.

If someone could tell me that this will eventually work, I will keep trying--but I have to have hope.  It is hard to listen to him scream when I know all I would have to do is rock him for 3 minutes and he would be out.  But I want him to learn to sleep independently--not like my 16 year old daughter who had to sleep with me and my ex husband every night because of mistakes I made when she was a baby.  I found this message board last night--I am so glad to have someone to turn to.  HELP!!!

To clarify above--my 16 year old slept with us when she was a toddler--not at 16!!  She would kill me if she read this...

Hi There

I have split this into a brand new topic as I think you may get more replies- it'll get "lost" on the end of the other one.
hope that's ok
