STILL ON 2 NAPS AT 16 MONTHS - IS THIS NORMAL?
« on: April 28, 2007, 12:58:54 pm »
Hi

I just wanted to check with anyone else that has a 16 month or older. My son still takes 2 naps one at 10am and the other at 3pm. He naps for approx. 1hr 15mins - 2 hours when he takes them. He goes to bed at 8.15pm and sleeps until 7am. Just recently he has been waking at 5am but going back down. Most of the other Mum's I know have put their children on 1 nap, so we now find it hard for playdates etc... What I want to know is, is he taking them because I'm putting him down or because he needs them? I don't want him to sleep his little life away. I know it sounds silly but I'm worried he's getting too much sleep?
I appreciate your help
Wendy ???

So is he sleeping 1 hr 15 minutes each nap or total between the naps?  If it is each nap, then I'd say he needs them.  He definitely would seem to have higher sleep needs than the average 16 month old, but I don't think there is any cause for concern.

my ds still has 2 naps a day, i tried to cut the am nap back to 30 mins 1 months ago but he was still overtired for bedtime at 7 pm. i tried every way possible to alter his napping as he slept through from 6 months to 9 months but after illness started waking again and then back to sleeping through but getting up at 5.30am.
he still has 1.5 hrs at 10 am and 1.5 at 3pm and is sleeping 7 till 7, i figured out it was the meds i was giving him for teething that were waking him up at 5.30 as he didn't wake till 7 when he hadn't had them ::)
it might be worth cutting back the am nap till your down to 40 mins and see if it helps with the early wake up.

hi there
we are only just transitioning to 1 nap and dd is almost 16 months. You're not unusual, they can be on 2 naps at 18 months sometimes.
With us, the sure-fire sign that dd needed less daytime sleep was the early wakings. She would want to start her day at 5-5.30am. She wouldn't cut her naps naturally, so I had to start waking her earlier from her morning nap. Sounds like this is the case with you.
Just like Emma said, I would start by cutting that morning nap to 45 mins. It might take a while for his body clock to adjust so don't expect to see a change straight away- with us it was a week or more before her night sleep went back to normal.
hope this helps
