13 month nap times
« on: April 30, 2007, 18:47:02 pm »
Hi toddler mums

I've had a quick flick through the previous posts, but can't find one about a 13 month old who doesn't nap during the afternoon, and so gets really, really cranky by the end of the day.  (not to mention her mum does too)

I thought I'd hit the home straight when dd reached one.  She used to be on a great routine (thanks to BW - I couldn't recommend it enough), but started going to play school for the mornings at 1 year old, and the old routine has gone and we haven't found a new one. Also, she comes back from play school so hyper.  Added to that there are the usual question marks over "perhaps she's teething", "perhaps she's too cold/hot", "perhaps she's just getting frustrated", "separation anxiety about being left at school" etc.  So, there are so many things that we have tried - calpol, giving milk in a dark room, pu/pd...so I've kind of lost the plot a bit.  Our routine is something like this....

7.00 wake and milk
8.00 breakfast
9.00 arrive at play school
10-11.00 nap at play school
12.30 lunch at playschool
1.00 pick up from playschool
2.00 Give her milk then try to put her down - CRIES/howls, doesn't sleep.  Get her up again and she gets steadily grumpier, bangs into things and becomes clingy and cross.
4.00 put down, cries a lot, but sleeps
5.30 have to wake her for food.  She is VERY cross at being woken up, and doesn't eat well.
6.30 bath (calms down)
7.00 bed

She loves school, and has settled in very well.  They say she is really happy there, and doesn't cry or get grumpy at all.  She also sleeps really well through the night and will not wake until 7.00 am.  So, how can I get her to sleep during the afternoon.  Does she need it?  Am I making things worse by trying to put her down? I need an EASY schedule for toddlers!  I hope someone can help.  She is usually a really happy baby and I hate seeing her so miserable.   :'(

Any advice?
Julia

It maybe that she is getting ready for 1 nap a day, it is not unheard of at this age, i notice she has an hour in the am, perhaps try to cut this back to 45 mins and see if it helps get her down earlier in the afternoon.

I realise she sleeps well at night, but if she is grumpy in the afternoon then she still probably needs the sleep.

hope that helps

I also think that her am nap needs to be reduced.  Have a look at this link.  It might help you to decide.

My daughter is 13 months as well.  We started the 2-1 switch around 11 months.  Now she is only taking one nap usually 12-2:30.  Good luck, Emily is much happier now that she is taking one long nap instead of two short ones!

Thanks ladies - good advice as usual.  I'll try and get the school to cut her sleep down (they can keep her better entertained)..and I'll check out the links.  A great relief knowing that I wasn't barking up the wrong tree.  I'll report back!

Julie - aim for something like this:

7.00 wake and milk
8.00 breakfast
9.00 arrive at play school
10-10.30 nap at play school (so get them to wake her up at 30mins)
12.30 lunch at playschool
1.00 pick up from playschool
2.00 - needs a nap here (should be a long 1.5hr long)
6.30 bath (calms down)
7.00 bed

It could also be seperation anxiety - she is fine at school and doesn't realise how much she missed you til she is home.  We are going through really really really bad SA at the moment, and it is messing with sleep in a major way.

My DD was in daycare several days a week for many months.  now I am a SAHM, which I thought would be good for both of us.  She was happy in daycare though, never cried when I left her, or cried when I picked her up, but definitely liked to be around me lots when I picked her up - fair enough, I wanted to be around her too.  Since I have stayed home, it is like she can't believe I am always there, and is constantly worried that I will leave her - and worse than ever at sleep time.

If you find the routine tweaking doesn't help, do consider that it mihgt be this (although if it is, I have no words of wisdom).

Hi Everyone

Well, since I last wrote we haven't had one bad day..even today when she had a jab in the am, and she's just gone down like a dream with no fuss.  The secret - the play school keep her up all morning, and so she's really tired when I pick her up at 1.00.  So she sleeps till 3.00 ish, and then we play, eat, bath and bed by 7.00.  Bliss.  Also, if she does sleep in the morning, I'm keeping her up all afternoon and she's really tired in the evening.  So I shift things forward by up to an hour and she gets to bed by 6.00.  she still sleeps until 7.00 the next am..
Perhaps I'm tempting fate - but thanks for everything!
Julia (and very happy Chloe)
