Too much at once ??
« on: May 12, 2007, 13:23:21 pm »
We just started putting DS in crib for naps during the day 2 days ago from being in his swing/stroller/carseat for most naps.  Now that he is sleeping in his crib, he only does 45 min every time and then he wakes up.  Any attempt to put him back to sleep results in him screaming hysterically for an hour at least and never goes back to sleep.  He was sleeping for 1-2 hours in his swing so I feel like he might need more sleep.  He also wakes up crying - another hint that he is still tired.  Since we just started putting him in the crib should we just get him used to that first and try extending his naps later down the road once he is more comfortable? Or should I do this now as well?  I feel like I am overwhelming him with all the changes.... :(

It sounds like your LO likes to be elevated. He got used to it. You should try elevating the mattress or buying one of those things that I saw in Toys r us to put in the crib to elevate his head.

Does he have reflux? Make sure before you put him in his crib that he is properly burped. That could also be the cause.

Good Luck

p.s My LO was always a 45min napper that only changed at 9mths old. She would have 3-45min naps a day. Now she naps twice for 1hr and longer if really tired. Believe me, it will change.

I've just started putting my DS in his cot/crib for his naps (previously he hadn't really been taking any at all unless he was being held).  He's doing really well, but I decided that if he was managing to stay asleep for up to 45 minutes then I might as well try to extend his naps at the same time.  I've had two successful attempt at using the w2s method of putting your hands on their legs and chest to ease them through the jolts.  DH tried this this morning and failed, but I think I didn't explain it to him properly!!!

I'm no expert.  I guess it's up to you, but if your LO is used to having naps of over 45 mins then he might appreciate you helping him through the 45 minute barrier!

Thanks for the advice!  I will try W2S even though I have tried it once and failed - he woke up! Ah!
I'll try it again though, probably not right timing.  He wakes easily especially if touched or even just a blanket gets put on him unless he is in a really deep sleep.

I don't think reflux is the problem - he goes down fine for naps and bedtime and puts himself back to sleep all night long but it's just extending his naps past 45 min.  I think he was just being lulled by the swing and car/stroller past the 45 min. mark and now that he's in his crib  - he is expected to do it on his own.  Poor guy!  I will try to help him through it.

We had the crib elevated for the first 8 weeks of his life thinking it was reflux but there isn't any difference.  He doesn't vomit much either and doesn't cry after feeds....just when we try to extend a 45 min. nap in the crib.

Thanks!  Wish me luck for the next nap time!

Hi there. How old is your lo?

Going from motion sleep (swing, stroller, etc) to stationary sleep is a big transition. But it really is better for him. Good for you for making the change.

Sounds like you've already gotten him to go down in his crib (GREAT WORK) and sleep for 45 minutes, so the crib sleeping may not be the cause of the short naps. It could be A times, developmental, or a combo.

If you want to post your routine we can take a look...

Hey Ben's mommy, I am sending you some good cyber vibes  ;D ;D. Did he have a better nap ?? I know that some mommies may disagree with me on this but I did not follow everything in the baby whisperer book. However, I did use it as a guide. I truly believe that sometimes you just need to relax a bit and let your LO guide you by reading his body language. Mind you I do credit Tracy for turning me into a great mommy. She certainly helped this past year.

I know that some mommies wanted to tear out their hair with their 45 min nappers but I did not have a problem accepting Sofia's short naps. What I tried to pay attention to was whether she woke up happy or not. She always woke up happy. So, I would not push the napping issue so much. But if your LO is waking up crying then maybe it is time to sleep train. Just go in your LO's room prior to the 45 min mark and caress his forhead and he will fall back asleep. Try it. It worked for us.

Good Luck
