Is it ok to stop the morning nap?
« on: May 10, 2007, 12:24:58 pm »
hi I am new, my child Libby is 10 and a half months old
our day goes like this
6 wake up -comes to our bed for hugs/kisses/chattering until 7 we go to the living room she plays while we drink coffee and make her formula we feed her at about 7:30 am then we play a little and she starts to be grouchy at about 8:30, up to two weeks ago I put her to bed  at 9 and she woke at 10 we would  then get dressed and go outside to the park with the dog, come back at 12 eat, have some wine down activity an go to sleep at 1 pm untill 3:00 -3:30 pm, then we go out again have a fruit outside in the park play with friends come home at 6  and play untill 7 when she eats have a bath with her dad (finaly) and  then we listen to soft music for about 10 min -  in bed by 8 rarely wakes up at night
my question is :  last week she slept only an hour at noon so I would like to stop putting her for that morning nap is it ok to just stop (it works better for me too)? should I let her sleep the morning nap until she gives it up herself?

that didn't work for Carmela.  I was putting her down at 1:00 but she wouldn't fall asleep until 2:00, then wanted to nap until 4:00.  that was how our nap issues originally started this go around.  I pushed it forward and she naps well and usually goes to sleep rather quickly (within 20 mins).

I'm going to start waking her at 2:30 consistently (I admit I was letting her sleep in a few days if she got a rough night sleep).  See where that leads us.  If she's still falling asleep after 9:00, then I'm going to push it to 2:15...try again. Then 2:00.  If still not sleeping until late at bedtime, then no nap!

I'll keep you girls posted!

And in the meantime my almost 12 month seems to be going to one nap!

10 months is really too early to go to one nap- some lo's may do but they are the exception rather than the rule. If you tried it she might be fine for a day or two but then accumulated overtiredness would likely kick in and cause all sorts of problems.
Most do the transition really gradually as to go from 3 to 6hr A times is such s huge leap for them, most lo's need a good few months to get used to it. During the time most of us on here are shortening the AM nap gradually to keep a good pm nap. As the am nap gets shorter over time, the pm nap gets earlier, until eventually the am nap disappears completely and you are left with 1 nap at lunchtime. If she is getting difficult to put down for the am nap I would try putting her down a little later, and shorten the nap to maybe 45 mins to begin with.
Also check out the 2-1 Nap thread at the top of the board, everyone there is going through the same thing and can give some good advice!
