2year old night-owl - can't wake him in the morning!
« on: June 01, 2007, 18:32:51 pm »
Hi everyone,

I have a problem that really drives me nuts, and I need your input. My 24 months old son has always been a great sleeper, to bed at 8pm, sleeping until 7-8am. He is very good at falling asleep on his own. Occasionally, he will fall asleep within minutes of hitting the pillow. Most of the time, he talks and sings for a while before nodding off. He has a little conversation will his stuffed animals, and then after 15-20min he goes quiet, and we know he is asleep. Ideal? Sure. BUT, here comes the issue: the last couple of months, he has started to sometimes take very long to fall asleep, and I mean REALLY very long, 1-2hours! The next morning, it is impossible to get him out of bed. He is really tired and grumpy and just wants to continue sleeping. He behaves like a teenager??!!!

What can we do? His late nights are random, occurring about every other or every third night now. There is no correlation to long or short naps during the day. He usually has 1-1.5 hour naps at daycare, between noon and 1pm. We put him to bed at 8-8.30 and he get him up at 7.30-ish. In the evenings, he is really tired, often even asks to go to bed, so I can't really put him down later. He never comes out of his room, and always plays/talks/sings quietly in his bed, so I can't really go in and demand that he goes to sleep either. Any good ideas and advice would be much appreciated!

Well I just recently read from here, that some toddler need their little "playtime" in bed before falling asleep, especially when there are milestones going on.
So could that maybe help that you put him in bed like 20-30 minutes earlier so he can have his needed awake time in bed and still fall asleep in decent time?

Kristina, Isabella can take about 30mins of "talking", etc... to fall asleep. Do you have a windown routine? He might be too stimulated to fall asleep or it could be that he is overtired. If his nap is only 1hr, I would put him to bed earlier than 8-8.30pm.
If the nap starts at 12 and its finished by 1pm, he should be in bed by 7pm (the latest) to avoid overtiredness. 5.5-6hrs is the average A time for a toddler.

Thanks Laila and Peike,

I never thought of putting him down earlier - but it makes sense. He has a good wind-down ritual I think. I will try! Dinner, bath, teeth brushing, body-lotion (he has very dry skin), PJ:s on, as tory, a little cuddling, and then off to bed. On the nights whwn Dad is in charge, he for sure gets way more "action" then when I am putting him to bed, but it does not seem to make any difference for the time he needs to fall asleep.
Thank you so much for your thoughts!
