waking every 3 hours at 4 months?!?!
« on: May 14, 2007, 15:37:19 pm »
Okay gals, hoping for some insight here as I am desperate for sleep...

My lo is 16 weeks old and weighs 13+ lbs.  He is exclusively bf.  He is on a rough EASY during the day and I feed him every 3-4 hrs though I am trying to stretch to 3.5-4 hours.  We have struggled with lengthening naps and I think (don't jinx myself) we are seeing some progress...

In the evening, I do cluster feed him and he goes to bed b/t 7 and 7:30 depending on his day.  He wakes up for his first feed b/t 11:30 and 2.  Lately it has been 12:30.  And then wakes up 3 hours later for another.  Sometimes he wakes at 5ish and we just settle him without feeding him.  This morning he woke up at 6:30 for good.

His first feed is usually a good one.  To be honest, I am not so sure about his second one because I am so tired I am usually dozing with him.  I just wonder if waking 3 hours after his last feed is a bit much considering he is almost 4 mos old!!!  At one point, he was sleeping 7-9 hours without a feed!

So, is this  normal??  If yes, I will roll with it.  If no, I would like to work on changing it and would appreciate suggestions as to how.

By the way, he does not get a dreamfeed.  We tried a number of weeks ago but it just seemed to wake him up more and he would want to nurse (he is not a big fan of the bottle).  My first lo is turning out to be an awesome sleeper in comparison (altho I thought we had issues then...lol).  He would take a df and then sleep until 5 or 5:30.  Looking back, that seems blissful!

Thanks for your help!

It sounds like you are doing pretty well.  Some babies can go all night without a feed at 4 months but this depends on many factors.  I would continue to try to settle without a feed for that second feed. Have you tried to settle him for the first.  Sometimes you can settle without a feed for the first one and then the baby will wake a couple hours later wanting a feed.  This would leave you with one feed in the middle of the night.

Hope that helps

I agree - I think one feed would be perfectly fine, but at his age two should not be necessary.

bcmom,

I'm afraid I offer no solutions, just support that you're not the only one going through this! Ellie is still waking at 1:15, 3:30-4 and again at 7am. She will scream and shout until I feed her and guzzles it down each time so I'm pretty sure she is hungry. I have tried upping her feeds/feeding times during the day to no avail.
Today I went to see a lactation consultant who I felt sure would tell me I had been doing everything wrong and that she shouldn't be waking so many times but who actually said that I should continue as I am- how that will bear on the future of things I'm not sure but she seems to feel that things will eventually sort themselves out. I hope so!

Good luck with everything. Let me know if you find a solution  ::)
