I think it's seperation anxiety, but not sure
« on: May 18, 2007, 12:27:32 pm »
Hi Everyone,

My 10.25 month old has begun waking and crying at night.  He usually wakes at least once, and cries fairly hard until DH or I go in.  He's an independent sleeper and is getting a total of 2 1/2 hours of naps during the day.  He learned to crawl and pull himself up several weeks ago, but his daytime sleep has been back on track.

I've tried giving Tylenol in case it's teething, but haven't seen a difference.

I think it's seperation anxiety.  Last night DH got up with him and Matthew woke and cried every time he tried to lay him down and leave the room.  Finally DH just sat back down and Matthew stood in his crib and watched him and finally laid down on his own and went to sleep.

We thought that the next time he wakes, we wouldn't pick him up (although he is reaching for us as soon as we walk in the door) and just comfort him with talking, rubbing his back or head, etc.

Are we on the right track?  His night sleep is usually great, so this is foriegn territory for us.

Thanks!
Cindy

Hi Cindy,

Does he show any signs of SA during the day? Protesting when you leave the room, that sort of thing?

Hhmmm.  Good question.  Yes, he tends to follow me if I leave the room.  Occasionally he'll cry a little bit.  At home he does pretty well.  When we go somewhere else, sometimes even at Grandma's house, he can tend to cling to me.

Oddly enough, he never cries like this at naptime.

When he cries at night, he sounds scared.  His cry is really high pitched.

Hmmmm is right. That makes me wonder if he is teething after all. Can you see anything?
