Need some filling afternoon snack ideas
« on: July 05, 2007, 02:30:49 am »
My 16 month old seems to be starving by dinner time, which is between 5 and 5:30 (fairly early).  I am thinking that maybe I need to give him a bigger or more filling snack in the afternoon.  I just need some ideas.  His usual snacks are Goldfish crackers, raisins, graham crackers, yogurt, or applesauce. He eats a really balanced and healthy diet with meals (lots of fruits and veggies, whole grains, cheese, etc), so I know he is getting a lot of good stuff.  Any new ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hummus and pita, Cottage cheese, cheese sticks, peanut butter and jelly?  Just a quick list that comes to mind.  I've not tried hummus yet....what about granola bars?  I found a good organic one recently (of course I've thrown it away already!)  Good luck!

How long does he go from snack to supper?  We usually do a half of a banana at 3 and we eat supper at 5 and havent had any problems.  You could also do cheese and crackers.

PANCAKES! My DS loves them with his applesauce! Cold and soggy are best, so doesn't matter if you make a couple and put them in the ridge for the next day! Yuk.

Thanks for the ideas!

Lana- He usually has his snack around 2:30 and dinner is between 5 and 5:30.  We do eat an early lunch, 11:15 or 11:30, because he just switched to one nap.

My dd really likes slices of ham and crackers with boursin or any garlicy soft cheese on. I serve this with some fruit on the side.

we like to have smoothies.  I often put a little tofu in the them to have some extra protein.  They have flavored tofu that's pretty good.  If you don't have time for that, we also like Odwalla Superfood (the green stuff), she LOVES it.  We do that with some homemade peanut butter crackers.

When we first switched to one nap and had to do lunch so early, rather than an afternoon snack, we did two lunches ;).

Also, even now, I find DD does great with 2 small snacks in the afternoon, but our dinner is usually later than yours (6ish).

Here are some of my dd's favourite snacks:

Banana with a little honey
Natural yogurt with a mixture of fresh fruit to dip in it
Humous and pitta bread served with grapes (has to have the grapes for some reason)
Soft cheese and bread sticks
Crackers with ham and cheese

Eggy bread!!

My DS 28 months now loves it.  Whisk an egg, dip a crustless piece of bread in it so it's coated and fry in butter....sprinkle with a little sugar if you want.

My ds has never ever eaten eggs, so it's an extra way to get an egg in to him.  I don't sprinkle with sugar.  He gets through 2 pieces of bread to 1 egg.
