Blankie Question
« on: May 18, 2007, 19:40:37 pm »
Hi!
Does anyone know how big a blankie can be and still be safe in bed with our LO's? Tanner is 7 months old and he has a stuffed dog in bed with him but he isn't that interested in it. I noticed that when he is tired he sometimes puts his hand down my shirt and then pulls my shirt into his mouth to suck - I'm thinking he might rather have a blankie than the stuffed dog.

I have a couple of things I could try: a thin flannel swaddle blanket about 4 ft by 4 ft. A plush velour blanket with a satin edge that is 30 inches by 40 inches. Otherwise I have a few small (7 inches by 15 inches) burp clothes - I could try one of those.

Are those first two too big to be in bed with a 7 month old who rolls all over the place? That is why I thought of the burp clothes. I just don't want him rolling around and getting it tangled around him and choking him.  :'(

I would be ok with purchasing something else if any of you have new ideas too!  ;D

Thanks!
~Jaci

My DS has a knitted type blanket - it has holes in it, so is easy for him to breathe through when he throws it over his face.

When he was younger I used to put him to bed and just lay it by the side of him, giving him the corner to play with.  Once he fell asleep I would move it out of his way.

I agree with Stacy, make sure you get on that is easily replaceable.  My DS will not touch any other blankie as we cannot find the same one.  His one is so old and worn and grey from being chewed and washed so much, but he loves it to bits.  We darent take it out anywhere with us incase we lose it.

my ds has a velour and satin blanket.  I think it is just whatever he likes.  try to put him on the floor with all 3 and see which he plays with the most and I would pick that one.

At around 4 months old we noticed that Sofia loved to cover her face with her receiving blanket. Somehow it made her fall asleep faster. I figure whatever works right?? I have many of them. So replacing is easy. Every night, I would check up on her to make sure she wasn't blocking her airways in anyway. Just being a paranoid mama...aren't we all ???

p.s She just turned 1yr and still loves her receiving blankets....too cute ;D

Thanks so much for the replies Ladies! Great advice! Good to know about putting it to my mouth and breathing.

The main reason I would like him to have a lovey/blankie is b/c we weaned his swaddle at night and he's really struggling with it. Last night he didn't care about the blankie at all - just screamed and screamed. But today I swaddled him in that same blanket for his nap and when he woke - I went to get him and he was happily sucking on it. So hopefully it's just a matter of time.

I started with the flannel swaddle blanket for now - but I like the idea of presenting all three and seeing what one he is more interested in. Although the burp clothes are bright colors and the other 2 are white - he tends to like colors! The flannel swaddle I'm using now is just cheap flannel diaper material from the fabric store and I had my MIL sew the edges - so very easy to replace.

Anyway...thanks again!

Colours are definitely a good idea.

My DS's blankie is white, and he has a particular corner which he chews, and it just won't come clean now  :-\
