Advice for flying with toddler
« on: June 12, 2007, 16:33:52 pm »
I'll be taking a 3-4 hour flight with owen when he's about 19 months old. I'd LOVE some advice on how to do this best!

*do i time flight for nap time?

*do i get hm his own seat?

*how to handle car seat, stroller, etc.

*how do i entertain him?

*do I get up and walk with him, or will that make it worse?

LO is sort of hitting terrible 2s.  He's getting pretty opinionated and fussy. He's also not talking yet, so figuring out what he wants can sometimes be a challenge! (He's almost 18 months now).

Hi

My inlaws live in Spain approx 2hours 30 mins from Uk and I was really worried about flying with my LO but it turned out to be ok.

I read in the BW toddler book to buy a new toy for him so we bought him a new book and car and took drinks and dummies etc on the plane.    Our flight was at midday not normally his sleep time as he slept on the way to the airport but to my suprise he fell a sleep on my husband for an hour once we took off and we enjoyed a glass of wine each.   When he woke he had some lunch and then I took him to to toilet with me and people were chatting to him up and down the plane.   The return flight was not so good as we were stuck on the runway  for 45 mins and it was his sleep time so he was overtired so he did cry quiet a bit and it was stressful but once we got going he fell a sleep again.   We were also sat near 2 little girls that kept him entertained.

It's tiring flying with a toddler but it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be -I think the key is not to get too stressed as I think he could pick up on my anxiety on the way back and that made him worse.

I want to go back in Sept so it really wasn't that bad

Emma

Sorry forgot to mention that I took my 3 wheeler pram and it was fine and my portable highchair and they put it in with the pram along with the sun canopy.    As for car seat we hired a car and hired a seat and I actually preferred that seat more than my own maxi-cosi as he seemed to sleep easier in it.

I would recommend a portable DVD player, lots of snacks and small toys that he has never seen before.  I wouldn't worry about arranging flight around his nap time...just know that he might be a little "off" that day....

Good luck!

I didn't worry about timing it for naptime, but it always worked out that he'd fall asleep on the plane no matter what time it was.

Def get him his own seat, even if you don't take the car seat. We just buckled him into the seat like a regular person and for some reason, that kept him from thinking about getting up. He had a lot of fun tinkering with the seatbelt too.

We always checked the car seat. I know bringing it on the plane is best safety-wise, but I was always traveling alone and physically could not bring one more thing on the plane. You can buy car seat travel bags that have a shoulder strap or just make the straps really loose and wear it as a backpack (if you're bringing it on the plane). Take the smallest, most lightweight stroller you have, like an umbrella stroller. You'll have to pass it through the xray machine. You can take it all the way to the gate and check it there, it will be waiting for you when you get off the plane.

If you don't have a portable DVD player, def rent one. Saved our lives on many a flight. Make sure you have plenty of snacks.

I never got up with him once he was mobile. I was always afraid he'd refuse to sit back down.

Another tip...let him run around the airport like a banshee before you board. Excess energy on a plane is not a good thing. Don't board early unless you REALLY have to. The less time you spend confined in one place, the better. Like Emma said, try to keep your stress level down as much as you can. Even if he screams and throws a tantrum the whole time, you'll never see any of those people again!

Thanks everyone!!!

So, I take it that you all recommend a window seat over an aisle seat? Since he's not potty trained, I probably won't need to worry about him going potty (we usually only change diapers when he poos).
