Awake in the cot but not crying...
« on: June 08, 2007, 03:11:13 am »
DS is 12 weeks and 4 days today - sometimes he has a good nap but some other times he would wake up after 50 minutes (think this is how long his cycle is) and cries his lungs out for 15-20 minutes. I am sort of doing shush-pat (he's not very interested in shush pat when he's screaming like that) and PU/PD but I was just worried that he's too young for PU/PD.
He is on 3.5 hours routine, with A time about 1.5 hour now and sometimes sleeps for 2 hours.

This morning he screamed after 40 minutes and I finally managed to put him down again after 20  minutes. Heard noise after around 15 minutes though but it stops so I thought he had gone back to sleep. 15 minutes later I went in his room, just to see him sucking his hand from his swaddle, talking to himself (or maybe to the mobile) but not crying. Not sure what I should do - should I reswaddle him and try to put him down again or let him resettle by himself (since he's not crying).

Also is he really too young for a PUPD?

Thanks a zillion!
Linda

Oh, just realised.. maybe it means that he's ready to have longer A time? He goes down very easy most of the time though, so I always assumed that he's pretty tired when I put him down after 1.5 hours A time....

Yes, he's too young yet for PU/PD - at this point it will only stimulate him further and he won't learn from it. It's intended to be used from 4 mo. and older.

If he's not crying, just leave him be. If you interfere he won't learn true independent sleep or how to put himself back to sleep with no help.
