resettling at night when baby is ill or teething - ideas?
« on: June 09, 2007, 12:05:54 pm »
Hi mums and dads

I have a beautiful 10 month old baby girl called Emily. We have been trying the pick up/put down for just over a week now and things are going well - she's starting to sleep though and her day naps are also extending.

If she wakes at night due to teething pain or a cold, I usually give her panadol or cold medicine. I understand you should  then keep her up for 15-20 minutes so the medicine has time to kick in. However when I try to put her pack into her cot she cries and doesn't want to resettle as she is wide awake by that time. Should I go through the normal nightime ritual again? Or would it be ok to feed her a bit then? I'm not sure pick up/put down would work here because she is really wide awake again.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Thanks!!

Cheers

Christina

If she wakes at night due to teething I would give her the medicine and put her back to sleep immediatly.  I don't know about that particular medicine but I have never been told to wait before putting them back to sleep.  When they wake in pain or because of illness I tend to cuddle and hug more as you can't do pu/pd on a baby who is in pain.

Hope that helps.
If your question has more to do specifically with pu/pd, let me know and I will move this to that forum.

Thanks for the advice, Myia. That's just what I thought re pu/pd so it was good to have this confirmed.

Just to clarify, when you put your baby back down straight away, does she cry? I have also tried it this way and she started crying with her hands up and as I didn't want to do pu/pd I ended up breastfeeding her to sleep.

Thanks

Christina :)

If I know for certain that she is in pain, I give the med and then soothe her back to sleep with pat/shh or some extra cuddles.  One thing that works well, for me, with reagard to the teething pain, is to put some gel on her gums after I give the pain meds.  It doesn't work well during the day but it seems to quickly take the edge off so that she can relax enough to fall back asleep.
If she has a cold or some other illness I just soothe her anyway I can while *trying* to avoid accidental parenting.  I wouldn't feed to sleep but I may cuddle, stay there in her room, rub her back etc...until she could relax.
Hope that helps.
