1 nap or 2 ?
« on: June 30, 2007, 05:34:09 am »
Sahria is an angel baby and she pretty much goes with the flow  :) She is now 9.5 mths

Our problem is naps, she seems to want lots of awake time and this is meaning that her second nap become late enough to become a problem at bed time

Our routine is pretty much as follows:

7.30am wake (activities thru the morning)
11.00am nap (2 hours or more if I let her)
1.00pm A time
4.00pm cat nap (she wants lots more but I wake her at 4.30pm to preserve bedtime)
6.30/7pm bedtime depending on how tired she is

Sleeps well unless teething or sick
She wakes around 6/6.30am for a bottle and then back to sleep till 7.30/8am

However recently I have on occassion only popped her down for 1 nap, so the changes are:
12 noon nap (sleeps 3 + hours)
3/3.30pm Activity time
6/6.30pm bedtime

and the same as above
Sleeps well unless teething or sick
She wakes around 6/6.30am for a bottle and then back to sleep till 7.30/8am

She is never grumpy when tired she settles quite well even when alittle overtired and essentially she gets more sleep when she has 1 nap then she does with 2

So what is your opinions - know she is only young but should I be going by age or by what she seems to be telling me ?

I'm confused because it would be easier for me if she were on 1 nap so I am unsure If I am letting my wishes cloud my judgement.

It certainly its unusual for that young to be on one nap, but not unheard of.
SO I would say go with a flow, when she is fine with it why not?Especially if she is taking oen long na 3 hours.

Hi Michaela
she is very young but all lo's are different and you know her better than anyone; if she is not overtired, is still happy and sleeping well at night then again go with the flow. I think most problems start when lo's are given only one nap every day and o/t accumulates very quickly. If it's only occasionally and you keep an eye on her then I guess she should be fine

Hi Michaela! :)

I agree withh others, if she is happy and you are happy go for it. With Liana, who was an angel and pretty much a go with the flow type bub, when we were changing we were able to do 1 nap most days and then every 3rd day or so go back to 2 naps to make sure she didn't get overtired.  Because she was so easy going it didn't mess her up at all, might work with Sahria if needed.

What age is the typical transition to one nap? My LO is 12 (almost 13 months) and he has been shortening his morning nap to 30-45 min. Afternoon nap is still about 1 1/2 hrs. Is this to early for "the big change"??? Should I start pushing his morning nap nap to slowly move to one nap or just leave him as he is?

sounds like he is managing "the big change" really well all by himself- you lucky mom! most lo's at his age need a short 30-45min am nap but typically mom has to wake lo as most can't shorten it themselves.
I would definitely leave him as he is for now and don't push any more changes, we were on a 30min am nap and 1.5hr pm nap until 15mo. He will let you know when he needs a change by either refusing his am nap, or his pm nap, or cutting back on his sleep even more. Until then relax and enjoy the ride!!!!

Hi,
My DD is also 9 1/2 months old and is also heading towards one nap early. She has suddenly gone to having 4 1/2 hrs A time after waking in the morning, usually around 6:30.She then has an hour nap from 11 - 12,then can only handle 3hrs 40mins A time after that nap.She has then a 1 hr 20 min nap until 5.This doesn't affect her bedtime at all,she can only handle about 2 1/4 hrs before bed.She has always managed long A times for her age,so I guess she will be onto one nap before long,I'll see how she goes.
