Chill out DVD for an 11 month old?
« on: September 01, 2007, 11:09:15 am »
Hi, I know many don't believe in TV for babies/toddlers but there are just times when I need my DD to go that little bit further before a nap or bedtime. Can anyone make any recommendations for something educational? She's very spirited and if I put Baby Einstein on she gets over excited and squeals and starts standing up at the tv, dancing and clapping - not very calming  ::) She loves animals, music and animated programmes but seems to get worked up if there are puppets or children.

TIA, Katt

Hi Katt!

I find that TV can be a little stimulating.  Think of it yourself (imagine me at the mo  ::) ) watching tv can make you not sleep easily.  For extending A time wiht my lo, I put her on our bed and play quietly or reading a book is a good way. or walk out into the garden and show her the plants.

hope that helps.

Katt--

Hello!

(and Hi, there aleesa!  ;) )

I know a lot of people don't like TV for lo's, but I SWEAR, sometimes it calms my spirited lo  ::) and  :-[ !!  Someone once suggested something called "Calm Baby"--I got mine off the net. (Amazon, I think)  It's just lullabies and songs about rain and such.  Scenes are all about water.  It's a very amateur looking video--but lo loves it  ::)

I don't use it for a wind down or anything and never more than 15 minutes at a time, and Aleesa's right, we really shouldn't be popping them in front of the TV before a nap (her wind down sounds perfect!  ;D )  But, there are DEFINATELY days where I need 15 minutes to collect myself BEFORE the wind down (a healthy mum = a healthy baby, I look at it as.... ;) ), especially if there has been problems getting lo down.  That video, really helped me.  I talk to him during it and sit with him, so it's not like I plopped and ran, ya know??

HTH!!  Good luck!!

Hi Annie!!  that sounds really cool.  I hope you guys didn't get me wrong - I *use* the tv..... ::) great for distraction when SA is bad and I need to go to the loo!  I have a dvd that I got from Big W (like Walmart I guess), that is called Little Boppa. Its a book with a dvd and its an animal one (they havea few kinds) and it;s just all clips of animals with classical music in the background.  she really likes that one too.

Nope Aleesa, no offense, here.   :D  I really can't believe that the TV does our lo's any good, but sometimes, when I just can't take the whining anymore--like today.... ::)  I guess I protect my sanity!!  ;D  What do you think it is about the TV that they like sooooo much??  Don't get me wrong, I love the boob tube myself, but I keep it off as much as possible nowadays.  I mean, he has every toy/gadget/excersaucer/walker known to mankind, and yet when he sees a remote control in my hand, you would think it was a coupon to a lifetime supply of "milk"!!!!!!  :-\

Sigh, needless to say--I'm gonna look that video you mentioned up on Google!!  :-[ ;D ;)

What about Fisher Price "Baby Day?"  There are other babies on it and the music isn't too obnoxious.  My little man also loves to watch Dumbo but he's a bit older.
God will give you exactly what you ask Him for, even if it's not in the package you expected it to be in.

Annie, it could be the format of the dvd.  I know that some dvd formatted for Aus cannot be used in the US.  I don't have the pack they talk about. I have the animal dvd and book.

sorry it won't work there - I would send you a copy otherwise!

Really anything with a classical background, like mozart I think would work well.

Awwwwww....you're sweet--no need to send it anyway, we have enough STUFF in this house!!!  It probably was a sign, I'm too quick to order stuff off the net for my little guy.  Keeps me money in me wallet, where it belongs!!  ;D

Thanks for all the recommendations, I will look into them  :)

I actually need it not for DD's winddown but for that time before her dinner when she hasn't napped well, you know how it is  ::) I have come to the conclusion this weekend that nothing will stop my spirited monkey from moving, there is just no chill out button on my model  ;D

....her model didn't come with one of those hey....

Just as an aside, my lo's not napping well (have to get back on the 45min nap thread i think...), and I have been putting her to bed early if they are short and early, and this has worked great.  it means that her dinner is early, but at least she's not as fussy. She is sleeping from 6-6.30 too which is great!! then again, I don't have a spirited one, just a mainly angel with a touch of touchy thrown in just to keep me on my toes...

My DD loves to watch Fisher Price 'Little People' before her naps. I put on the DVD, the episodes are 5 minutes each, some days she will watch one and be ready, the next day it might be 10.

We also used CDs when she was younger, the Fisher Price Tender Lullabies.
