Wakes up ever 30 mins but easy to put back
« on: July 19, 2007, 15:25:22 pm »
During the day my 5 week old daughter wakes up every 30-45 mins during her naps.  It is easy to get her back to sleep (put pacifier in her mouth and turn on her sound machine to heartbeat). I know she is just waking from the changing cycles in her sleep but how do i get her to do it on her own. I am not going in too early. If i dont go in, it WILL escalate into a full blown cry. Do i let her just wake up. If so, do i feed her right away or wait until its the 3 hour mark.

Hi there. Congrats on your new baby and welcome to the BW boards! You will find loads of great information here.

Many many babies are taking short "naps" at this age. Really, at this age, a baby has many sleep cycles throughout the day and regular sleep/nap patterns are just starting to emerge. At 5 weeks, our A times were very short (40 minutes or so)--including feeding, diaper change, and wind down routine. I wasn't too strict about the times, I just tried to loosely follow the EASY pattern and make sure we had some A after meals, even if it was just a diaper change. Many naps were 45 minutes, but at that age I focused more on getting her to sleep independently. If she woke early most times I got her up. I would wait a bit to feed until the 2.5 hour mark, so sometimes we had EASAE. I didn't really start working on nap extension until closer to 12 weeks.

HTH!
