Can't seem to get my son into a routine
« on: August 14, 2007, 12:48:38 pm »
My son is 5 months old ( he was born 10 weeks prem so he should only be 3 months old). The only routine we have is his daily nap from 12 - 3 pm. He is a snacker and loves to feed on and off for 2 hours at a time.He is still a breastfed baby. I've tried giving him a pacifier, but to no avail.  He also does not want to dreamfeed as he's too fast asleep for that. He sleeps very badly at night and I need some desperate help! Thank you

Below are some links that are helpful when starting to implement a routine...

I would say the first step would be to stop the snacking. He will probably be mad for a day or so, but if you hold off for atleast 3 hours then he will take a larger feeding the next time around. Take a look at the links above and let me know what you think.

I agree that the snacking thing is important to tackle first. My son, 4 mths old, was also a snacker and eating every 2 hours for about 10 mins... so slowly over the last week, I have been encouraging him to take more at each feeding by making sure to burp him often between breasts and being sure to offer the breast over and over until I am sure he is really not interested any more. Gradually, this helped him extend the feedings and he is slowly working his way to four hours... There may also be times in the day where he will only go 3 hours but later in the day go 3.5 or 4 hours... so that is a possibility too.

Hope that helps.
