afternoon naps
« on: August 11, 2007, 21:56:36 pm »
Hi, i haven't been on here since we were dealing with 45 min naps. but Ainslee will be 10 months old the 17th of this month and she is starting to scream hysterically for her afternoon nap.. this is just recent starting the last 2 days.. She goes down for her morning nap without any problem... She puts herself to sleep for all naps and bedtime, so i dont know if she is just not tired enough for the nap or if she is ready to drop it and go to 1... her schedule looks like this

E 900
A
S1200-130

E 130
A
S 430-600

E 600
A
S bath, bottle, cuddle time and bed by 900..

if my move the afternoon later then that pushes bedtime back and I really dont want to go past 900. yesterday when she refused her nap we let her stay up and she did fine with no sleep but i think that 7-8 hours of A time is really long for her and she always seems ready for her morning nap after 3 hour A time... she is well established on 3 solid meals, she doesn't have a prop... Any suggestions

You probably need to start considering shortening her morning nap so that she goes down better for afternoon. I would so something like this:

9 - wake & eat
12-1pm - morning nap
4-5.30pm - afternoon nap
9pm - bedtime

7 hrs is a very long time & if it happens again that her pm nap is not taken, I would do an earlier bedtime rather than keep her up until her usual bedtime hour. So instead of 9pm, I would do 8pm.... or even sooner.

We went out to dinner with some friends or we would have put her to bed earlier.. she would have been bored at the house and gotten cranky and would have went to bed earlier... since there was something for her to do she was fussy at all.. but i do agree that 7 hours is a long time and thats why i was asking.. it is just so frustrating, you start of with 45 min naps trying to extend them and just when she is doing great with 2 1.5 hr naps she changes it up on me.. i just feel bad for waking her up from a nap, i feel that if she is sleeping then she must be tired.. but i will try to shorten the am nap and she how it goes.. i did get her to nap her afternoon nap yesterday, she woke at 600 ( actually i woke her ) and she didnt end up going to bed till 930 bc she was tired enough to go to sleep.. she did sleep thru the night so that was good.. when do they go to just 1 nap and what age does the A time increase?

Babies start showing signs of transitioning to 1 nap around this age but I do think that alot can't handle the 5hrs A time for 1 nap... so its a matter of shortening one of the naps.

The transition takes place somewhere between 12-18months, 15-16months being about the average.
