I have a newborn and have a question about bottle feedings
« on: August 16, 2007, 20:33:06 pm »
ok I have a question. New Baby Chaunda was born August 13th. She was 7.1 and has gone down to 6lb 11 oz. She was sort of drinking every 2 1/2 to 3 hours. I know she's a newborn, but I made a mistake with my first child and started feeding her wayyy to often and she was gassy and than the gassiness got worse. So I'm trying to keep it somewhat spaced out and I make sure she's not gassy when she acts like she's hungry and gets fussy and try other methods besides RUSHING to feed her. She is drinking about 1.5 oz a feeding now. I bottle feed.

THE QUESTION: Today she ate

7am - 1.25 oz
9:30 - close to 1.5 oz
1pm ish - 1.5 oz
3:15 ish - 1.5 oz almost 1.75 oz. The most she's had.

Notice the time between 1 and 3:15 is a little over 2 hours, which is a bit less than the average 2 1/2 to 3 hours. I know she's a wee litte one. : )

It's 4:30pm now and she's sort of acting hungry. She's taking a pacifier and falling back to sleeep but than waking and getting fussy and I think she's acting hungry. I'm trying to hold her off just a little do you know what I mean? 3:15pm to 4:30pm is  only a SLIGHT over an hour.

You think this is ok? I would really like her to at least stick to a 2 hour schedule. Or should I be feeding her after just an hour if she wants?

Thanks for the advise. She sort of just started doing 2 1/2 to 3 hours in the hospital. but I can pretty much understand that I can't expect that on a consistent basis. I guess we are nervous about Chayse and how the Dr. eventually told me she was a snacker and how she was self soothing by feeding and her gas got worse by it. Of course she was a tad bit older than our little Chaunda. or afraid she'll want to do like .5 oz every hour instead of 1.5 oz every 2 - 3 hours.  I definetely realize I won't be able to start EASY right now. Just want to make sure i'm going in the right direction. There has been times where I'm glad I didn't rush to feed her, as she ended up say doing something like burping and than she didn't act as hungry. So far, she's been ok. She fell back to sleep and just woke up just a wee little and isn't fussing yet "lol". oh and I just heard some hiccups.  Thanks for the quick reply and advise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey there congrats again on your new little one.

I bottle fed right from the beginning with both of my boys like you I fed my first one whenever I thought he was hungry and I ended up with a snacker.  With B I "made" him wait at least 2.5 hours between his bottles.  In between I would give him the paci cause he had a really big need to suck.
