6 month old changing routine??
« on: August 21, 2007, 17:50:51 pm »
my DD is just about 6 months and she is changing her sleep routine and I don't know what to do nw. she is usually a huge napper (unlike my first daughter) and always has been . now she is taking a nap in the morning and it is only about 40 minutes and then her afternoon nap is way shorter now. I am trying to get her on 9am ish and 12 or 1ish with a catnap in the evening. I cannot get her to extend her am nap and her afternoon nap was 3 hours and now it is about an hour or a little more. this is not enough for her and I don't know what to do.

she used to take a nap at 8am 11am and 1pm and 5pm now she is getting older for that 11am nap and I cannot consolidate the 8 and 11 together. thus I think she is getting over tired for her afternoon nap.

this morning she was up at 5 am until 6:15 and then went back to sleep until 7:30 but I think she woke at 5 am because she was overtired. how do I do all of this? she is way off track

so today went very well. she napped 8-9 am then she refused the 10:30am nap she used to take and I moved her to the next sleep cycle and just moved it up a bit  at 12:30pm, she slept until 3:30pm  ;D   then she took her catnap at 5pm and to bed at 7,

I am surprised she could last from 9-12:30 and then take her big nap like that. I will keep my fingers crossed for tomorrow.  ;)

My just 6 month old recently had a drastic change in schedule as well. He started taking short am naps, and yet I had a hard time thinking he could be ready for more A time. He still seemed to get tired at 1 to 1:45 min ( I had been putting him down at 1:45 min activity). Low and behold, 2 things happened. I kept him up slowly more and more each day ( against my BW judgement) (even though he seemed a little cranky) and he actually can stay up 2 hours 30min. The naps are now 2 hours each. The other thing was 2 teeth popping through.

Good luck. With your DD sleeping well at night, and hitting the 6 month mark, your awake time should be getting a lot longer.

she is doing great...... ;D

she naps at 8am. for about an hour or a bit more. then she is up until 12:30pm and sleeps until 3:30ish and then takes a catnap at 5:30 and bedtime at 7:30ish.

she can handle being up for that long in the morning because she is so rested from the night before. and my 2 year old naps at 1pm so that was my goal to get them on the same page. she has been at this scheduld for over a week now.  ;D

I was going to start a new thread but this is exactly what I was about to post about.  DS (6mos old next week) decided yesterday that naps are for the birds!  He has always gone down soooooo easily, and can sleep independently.

Yesterday, he woke at 5:50am.  I just let him lie in his crib talking until 6:20.  Well in hopes of keeping the routine on track, I didn't put him down until 8:20.  That was fine, he went right down and slept his usual 1:20 (he has 38min sleep cycles, trust me I have timed them).  Then we went to brunch with friends and he was up for 2:30 then fell asleep in the car on the way home and would NOT go back down.  So he got about 25 min there.  Then I tried to put him back down after the usual 2hr A time and he wouldn't have it.  I got him down after 2:30.  Then even at bed time he wouldn't fall asleep until he had been up 2:30.

He has done exactly the same thing today.  He went down fairly with some work for nap 1, easily for nap 2, and right now he has been up for almost 4hrs because he won't go down for nap 3.  He kicks and fusses and just has an all out fit until I take him out of room and he literally laughs.

Should I keep trying to get him down even when he doesn't seem tired?  He has not shown me any sleep cues, no yawning or eye rubbing and is perfectly happy playing with his toys.  I am going to feed himhis solids and put him to bed for the night soon but I just can't imagine how he is keeping this up!!!  Any thoughts?

Hi There, my ds is doing exactly the same, waking at 5.30ish and the naps are all out during the day, not wanting to go down at the usual times.

i would be really interested in an answer to the last post by Shanlbc and what routine should i be following as the initial 4 hr easy isn't working?

It's funny, we were doing pretty good with the 4hr EASY during the 4th and 5th month but this past month he went back to a 3.5hr routine.  He started getting hungry after 3 to 3.5hrs and taking full feeds.  So I guess I have pretty much had to trust that he knows what he wants and work the routine around his needs...which are pretty much activity, eat, activity, sleep.  I try not stress too much about the times.  Of course, he did take his naps much better today so it's easier to say I am not stressed out today...just wait until tomorrow! :P

shanlbc - keep in mind that a 6 month gs is lurking for you :-)  So this may be the culprit of going back to a 3 or 3.5 hr EASY.  How long has ds been on solids?  How is he sleeping at night?

DS has been on solids for about two weeks now.  We have been through all the veggies and have added fruits.  We only do evenings right now, but I was planning on adding brkfst after he is officially 6mos, about a week from now.  He hasn't reduced his milk intake...as a matter of fact it has increased a bit.  His sleep has improved quite a bit over the past three weeks.  I have posted countless times on the nightwakings board because he was only doing three hour stretches.  Now he does anywhere from 5 to 7 hr stretches, usually after the DF which isn't a DF because he wakes for it at a different time every night.

Funny, every time DS changes his routine, eat, sleep, or whatever, DH and I say, It must be   a growth spurt :) :).  He has been eating every 3 to 3.5hrs for about three weeks.  We used to have lots of problems with feeds because he would only take 3oz at a sitting and it would take an hour and a half to get him to finish a bottle.  Now, his reflux has improved and he will down a bottle in 10min, esp since I started using the bigger nipples.  But he takes a full feed every time, even after 3hrs.

Well i guess we can rule out a gs  :)  How much does Joshua weigh?  It could be that he is requiring more food at this point so you might want to consider starting breakfast a bit early.  Glad to hear the nw's are better.  I know that I am much happier if I can get ds to sleep a decent stretch at night  :)  Makes me not so cranky when he has stinky naps!!

I thought the same thing as far as starting brkfst early. We have been through all of the "1st Foods" veggies and fruits with the exception of apples which I will start tomorrow so he is definitely used to eating a variety of foods.  Not sure how much he weighs, I am guessing between 16.5 and 17lbs.

Naps were way off today...but my nanny has been off for two weeks with her daughter who just had a baby.  I told her we had started sleep sacks instead of swaddling but she didn't realize I was doing them for naps too so she just laid him down with nothing.  That may have contributed to today's issues.  I guess we'll see tomorrow!  I am just so glad she is back.  Joshua loves her so much and our back up babysitting was not at our house so maybe that has affected things too.  I office from home but am a sales rep so I have to get out three days a week and it has been really tough on the days we had to go to the babysitters.  Maybe things will calm down now that we are back on our regular routine.  Thanks for the feedback!

The change in babysitting is sure to make a difference!  I do hope that things will get back to normal now that your nanny is back  :)  Keep us posted!
