My little Houdini and not sleeping through the night.
« on: August 22, 2007, 14:04:50 pm »
Okay, Molly has not given me more that a 4 hour stretch since she was born unless I sleep with her.  I am okay with that, she is a hungry girl.  We are also having issues with her taking the bottle when I am working so some nights I know she is making up for the calories she missed early in the day.

Anyway, I am so tired.  And now she is hitting that transition phase from the swaddle to having her arms out.  She still NEEDS to be swaddled otherwise she wakes herself up, or keeps herself up.  We have been using a sheet to swaddle her since it's a bit warm here and the sheet is a bit stronger.  But she can still get out of our tightest swaddle within minutes.  She gets mad too - doesn't want to be swaddled anymore.

So, I am finding myself holding her until she is very sleepy, then swaddling her, holding her for a little while again and then putting her down pretty much completely asleep.

I don't want this to turn into a bad habit - so what shall we do?  Is it just one of those, this too shall pass things?  If yes, how long is the transition typically (I don't remember).

Any other suggestions?

I am looking to start getting her to sleep through the night once she is take the bottle better - which could be when she weans ;)

TIA!

No advice, but just to let you know my DD is 7 1/2 months old and has only just started sleeping through the night!

OK maybe a little advice, someone will probably have better advice, but have you tried shh/pat at all?

Also it might help if you could post your routine for someone to have a peek at x

Have you tried the aussie swaddle?  It worked wonders for us ;D B was swaddled until 7.5 months and then we dropped it cold turkey.

I was a little spoiled because Annabelle was giving me 7 hour stretches by 10 weeks and liked being swaddled.  We don't really have a routine yet, she is on 3 hour easy and even then sometimes she is hungry at 2.5hrs or won't eat until 3.5hrs.  I was just thinking I should probably figure out something that will work with our family schedule and work to stick with it.  It's just difficult because some days we are home all day and other days we have to take A and pick her up or I leave for work earlier and "top her off" with a BF.  Bleh.  It's a good thing she is an easy baby!

I don't think I need to do pat/ssh because she will put herself to sleep if she has her arms swaddled.   But now that she doesn't want to be swaddled, if we lay her down awake she works to get them out and then starts "talking" and rubbing her blanket on her face.  I guess I could just go with it and soon she'll learn how to put herself to sleep with here arms our.  Hmmmm...

Lana - No I have not tried the Aussie swaddled, it's posted somewhere isn't it.  I'll try to find it.

Here is the link for the aussie swaddle https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=1439.0

I found that if I picked a time to start the day then the rest of the  day sort of fell into place KWIM?

LOL.  Not so good.  I need to cut up a new sheet, as the way we cut up the one we have is too small.  I tried it 4 times and it was a joke.  I think if I do, it will work out because when I had her arms under the sheet she could still get her hands to her mouth, which is what she really wants.  But it doesn't allow her as much "freedom" as not being swaddled.

And today, she was able to break free of her regular swaddle in under minute!  LOL.  Good thing she's so cute ;)
