Breakfast ideas?
« on: August 23, 2007, 12:37:11 pm »
My LO almost 16 months is already tired of what I give him for breakfast.  I am also limited in what I can serve him because he does not like cheese, cream cheese or any spread on his bread.  On any given day, he has been getting baby mueslix + bananas or oatmeal + bananas, toast or bagel (without any spread), cheerios, and milk (he really does not like milk and I work extra hard to give it to him- most of the time I have to give it to him in a spoon)  He loves boiled eggs, so he gets that once in a while.  I tried someone's recipe of egg + cheese + milk and he did not like it.  He loves fruits and he will get fruits at the end if he has ate well since fruits are like desert to him.

He starting to eat very little since he is tired of what I serve him daily.  Anyone has any suggestions?

Colin's favorite breakfast has always been oatmeal, do you think your DS would eat that? Or how about eggy bread like french toast?

How about pancakes (you can make a batch and keep them in the fridge and just reheat in a non-stick pan at mealtimes) or frozen waffles.

Or, if you wanted to try something a little different, there are some instant south Indian mixes for things like Dosas (thin crispy pancakes), Uttapams (thick pancakes) (both of these are made with a mix of ground lentils & rice so they're healthy and have a flavour my lo loves) and upama (cream of wheat with some not-hot spices) -- all are add water & stir so they're really easy, and they're not too expensive. It takes about 5 minutes to mix up the batter and cook it but it makes for a nice change -- uttapams are really nice with some veggies (tomatoes, finely chopped/pureed whatever-you-have-handy) or coconut in them, and you can put some leftovers with them (anything with a sauce) to use leftovers for lunch.

Hope this helps :)

IndiaJenn:

That sounds interesting.  Where do you get this mixes?

Colin Mac's mom:  Thanks for the suggestion.

Our two year olds breakfast is the same just about every day...two slices of wholegrain toast... the slight variation is whether or not this week is Jam, peanut paste or liverwurst (I know!!!) topping!

Very occasionally she will mix things up and demand a piece of fruit or some yoghurt. Even more rarely she will eat cereal but never with milk added *sigh* Occassionally we get a request for a boiled egg (rare these days as she seems to have gone off dipping things (e.g. egg, sauce, mayo))

Toddlers don't seem to have the same need for variety as we grown ups do so I wouldn't get too stressed about lack of variety! As long as they eat...no problemo!

The mixes are usually found in the "international foods" section of a grocery store, or if there's an Indian grocery store somewhere you'll definitely find them there.

If you have a blender, you can also make them - here's how: (it sounds more difficult than it is)

- buy "peeled urad dal" (white skinless lentils)
- buy short-grain white rice (long will do, but short is cheaper)

Soak 1 part dal with 2 parts rice overnight. Drain and put in a blender/grinder and grind, adding enough water to make something that looks like pancake batter. Add a pinch of salt and whatever "fillings" you want (or add them to the individual pancakes in the pan - just sprinkle them on top before you flip). I find it works best to cook these on medium-high heat.

Hope you can find the mixes - they're much easier - and if not that the above recipe works well for you.

I think somebody mentioned pancakes - I make 2 big batches every once in a while and freeze them.  Just put them in a freezer bag with small pieces of parchement or wax paper inbetween each pancake and you can take what you need in the morning, pop them in the toaster oven and they're perfect!!!

Ds also loves smoothies - plain yogurt + frozen berries, mango, peaches, etc. + a touch of honey and blend it all together - really yummy.

We also do a lot of oatmeal, eggs and french toast around here.

Breakfast is one of the only meals that I know ds will eat, so I try to make it a good one :)

Scrambled eggs with toast; baked beans with toast (spoon fed or can be picked up for extra messy!); chunks of cheese and bread/ toast; fruit smoothie; rice cake with spread or without; bacon and toast/ sandwich; french toast with cinnamon; banana mashed and spread on toast; muffins (made with wholewheat and non-refined sugar); cheese and ham toasties;  yoghurt; pancakes; just toast; sausages;

Hope there's something for him there!!
