The variations is appetite sound normal. As far as the "once a picky eater always a picky eater" I think it really depends on the reasons behind the picky eating. So, for example, some little ones become "picky eaters" because of independence/control attempts, because they are snacking throughout the day on less healthy choices, or because they have gotten used to the fact that if they whine enough they will get the food they want. These kids often will eat one food one day with no problems, and then completely refuse the next. I do not think these kiddos need always be picky eaters if the dynamics are changed by the parent. On the other hands are the kiddos who are picky eaters because they have difficulty with certain tastes and/or textures. These kiddos do less of the eating one food onne day and refusing the rest. Instead, they tend to refuse the same foods over and over and over, and look like they are having a harder time with the taste/texture of new foods when they do choose to try them. True picky eaters often also have very small appetites overall, where food just isn't that great of a motivator for them and they could go happily without some meals. So if answer to your question, I think it depends which "camp" your LO falls under!! HTH
