Always Falling asleep after feeing
« on: August 24, 2007, 07:50:39 am »
Hi, my son tends to fall asleep right after his evening feed between 6-8pm. If I dont wake him he can sleep till 12 or 2am.  But then afterwards he will keep waking up every 1-2hrs during the night!  How can I get him to move his long sleep to start from 11pm or 12am?  Right now he is 2months old and during the day he can sometimes nap for 2-3hrs. Also during the day he does not fall asleep after the feed. So im sure he knows day from night, but right now his "night" is starting too early.  Should i stretch out his awake time by not letting him sleep after the 7 or 8pm feed and then bathing him at 9pm? i'm just afraid that by waking him up before his ready breaks his sleep pattern and will make him even less likely to sleep through the night.

another thing is that after his 12am feed he falls asleep right away and i'm not able to burp him even after patting for up to 30min, so that sometimes he will wake up in the middle of night due to gas.  he farts very hard and loud waking himself up. what's the best and quickest way to burp a very sleepy or sleeping baby?

Also i have a question about the cluster feed.  do i feed him his normal amount of 5 oz at each feed? or just feed him as much as he will take?

Help!

Can you post a detailed routine of what your day and night looks like with E, A, windown and S please.

With regards to the cluster feeding, I would make up a normal 5 oz bottle and see how much your lo will take, over a few days you can jude how much he actually takes and then start making smaller bottles if needs be.

This Sunday his schedule was like this

E 1230am - 5 oz
E 0300am - 1 oz water
E 0545am - 1 oz water
E 700-730am - 4.5 oz
S 730 - 845 (includes 15 min. wind down)
A 845-10am
S 1000-1130am (includes 15 min. wind down)
E 1130am - 5.5oz
A 1200-130pm
S 130-200pm
A 200-300pm
S 300-500pm
E 500pm - 5 oz. (he would have gone to sleep but we kept him awake with TV and singing)
A 530-630pm
S 630-900pm (includes 30 min. wind down)
A 900-930pm (bath)
E 930pm - 5 oz.
A 1000-1100pm
S 1100pm-130am (includes 15 min. wind down)
E 145am - 4 oz.

Then he would wake up around 330 or 430am. Before, i would change his nappy and he would go back to sleep quickly. Last night he made a few crying noises, I suspect from being too hot so I flipped him on his side and put a pillow to prop up his back (to cool his back) and he went back to sleep right away. He always sleeps on his back so even if i dress him with light clothing, he'll aways get too hot from the foam mattress. I live in Hong Kong, so I also have the air conditioner on all night so the rest of his body is cool it's just his back that gets very hot.

I'm struggling with what to do. I'm thinking he has the potential to sleep through the night.  Should i decrease the amount of milk he's drinking to 4 oz and give him an extra feeding during the day? In the evening feed between 6-8pm, 90% of time he's so sleepy that no matter what i do he wont wake up after drinking the milk.

hope that is enough info for you analyze.

THANKS

Personally I would not have bathtime so late - I would aim to have your lo in bed for the night by 7:00- 7:30 as having activity time at 10:00 pm at night is very late.

I would stick to the amount you are feeding during the day and stick to cluster feeding as well as a dreamfeed but without the activity time so late.  This can actually cause more night wakings than having an earlier bedtime.

I am also going to pop this thread over to EASY and let the ladies over there look more into your routine.

Hi, Thanks so much for the advice.  I guess I was thinking if I end his day too early then he would end up waking earlier in the night as well.  I'll try to make sure his naps stay under 2hrs during the day and do the cluster feed and dream feed.  But I'll have to do 3 days of wake to sleep first because he is definitely a habitual waker now... at 230am and then at 430am. :(

Good luck - let us know how things go.  Definitely limit his naps to no more than 2 hours, and see how it goes.

Keep us posted.
