Books for Toddlers - up to 3 years.. can you recommend one??
« on: August 27, 2007, 16:41:45 pm »
Post some of your favorite book titles here - DS is beginning to loose interest in his baby books, and is more interested in real story books. We only have a few - I've posted some of his favorites here - and would love to see what your LOs are enjoying reading at this age. :)

1. Yertle the Turtle, One Fish Two Fish, Cat in the Hat, Hop on Pop, etc. by Dr. Seuss
2. The House at Pooh Corner by AA Milne (I know, no pictures! He loves it anyway...)
3. Lost in the Woods by Carl Sams
4. His ISeeMe name book
5. Peter Rabbit pop up book
6. Curious George (the original story)

3. Harold and the Purple Crayon
4. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
5. a big farm book with the Fisher Price characters in it--it's his "business" reading for going potty  ::)

Alison - Aren't those I spy books wonderful!? What a great invention.

Kim - We have Goodnight Gorilla - but I never know what to say since there are no words, I just describe the pictures. Same with Good Dog, Carl. What do you say?

Kate,

I had to work at the Goodnight Gorilla thing.  And ds wanted to hear it about 50 times in a row.  ::)  He liked the story when I referred to the zookeeper as the daddy and his wife as the mommy.  So I started out with "The daddy says good night gorilla and the gorilla takes his keys."  And then I described some items in the gorilla cage.  "The gorilla climbs out of his cage and follows the daddy with the flashlight."  "Then the daddy says good night elephant, and the gorilla lets him out of the cage with the pink (whatever) key."  Etc.  "The armadillo, giraffe, hyena, lion, elephant, gorilla, and the mouse with the banana follow the daddy into the house."  Basically, I just keep listing the animals and what they're doing.

If ds wants to hear the book AGAIN, we follow the mouse through the book.  Or we notice the color of each key.  Or the stuffed animal in each animal's cage.  I also noticed that you can follow the pink balloon--it's on every page.  There are a lot of details in the book that I really wish I didn't know about.  ::)  It's not my personal favorite book.  :P

That's a great idea, Kim - following the mouse or the balloon, I get tired of it too but that helps to mix it up!! :)

Oooohhh - great topic!

Dd loves books but hates it when we read them to her. She just loves to flip the pages and look at the pictures. She also likes it when we ask things about the pictures, but that's not a very good nighttime activity is it ??? ??

It sounds like an ok nighttime activity to me.  We read books throughout the day instead.  Ds is more interested in eating a snack and watching reruns of MASH on tv right before bed.  ::)

MASH, LOL!!! Sounds like something my DH would put on. I came downstairs the other AM and found DS watching some Clint Eastwood movie with DH. Cowboys and Indians. Not real age appropriate.

I forgot to add:

7. The Going to Bed Book (Sandra Boynton - any Boynton book really)

Keep those titles coming! I'm building a wish list online for DS' birthday :)

Ack--another Clint Eastwood fan?  My dh is, too.  :P

Sheep in a Jeep by Nancy Shaw.  She also wrote Sheep in a Shop, Ship out to Eat, and a few more.

My 2yo (27mo) is influenced by being a 2nd child... he mostly only likes books that take about 5mins+ to be read to him, shorter ones he will sit & 'read' to himself

He likes anything Thomas the tank engine
Mr Men & Little Miss books
Spot stories
Maisy
Bananas In Pyjamas (Aussie)
Any thing by Mem Fox (also Aussie)
Little Black Pony & Little Black goes to the Circus (Dr Zuess)
Any Pooh bear stories

Riley (25 months) is currently in love with all things Mr McGee! Pamella Allen (maybe only in Oz?) has some fabulous books for toddlers and older children, Riley has also loved Clippity Clop and Who sank the Boat. She loves finishing the sentences as they all rhyme and have simple words. For example I say Mr McGee lived in a .... and Riley says TREEEEEEE.

Anything by Todd Marr (books about family, Mummies, Daddies) goes down well as well.

DS likes most of the books by Julia Donaldson ("The Gruffalo" and others). He has read some books by Mike Inkpen

When he was younger, we went through a phase of books with flaps. Last year, he liked Pocoyo

Pat the Bunny by Dorothy Kunhardt is still a big hit.  Lots of things to do--pat the bunny, look in a mirror, smell flowers, etc.

I've never heard of Mr. McGee.  :-\

Claire loves Sandra Boynton as well. She also LOVES the pigeon books by Mo Willems.  She thinks they are GREAT.  The other day we were walking and Jeff said, "look at the pigeon," and she said "no pigeon, no bus."  You know..."Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus."

We read Shel Silverstein as well.  She really thinks "Runny Babbit" is funny.
