reactions to nutramigen
« on: August 29, 2007, 13:08:04 pm »
I was just wondering if any of your LO's have had a reaction to nutramigen and what the symptoms were. My LO just has interupted sleep, whinging in his sleep and shaking his head. This is a lot better than the arching and screaming we had with soya milk, but wondering if he could still be reacting to it, although paed has told me thats its highly unlikely and wouldn't change it.

How long has your lo been on the Nutramigen?  Does he also have reflux?  Abby did have a reaction to Nutramigen.  She would cry during feedings.  Her pedi GI switched her to Neocate.  If it doesn't get better then I would ask to try Neocate.  It is amino acid based so there are no milk or soy proteins in it.

HI Andrea, yes he has reflux. He's started to refuse bottles again and still has numerous night wakings. Went to GP today (behind paeds back :-[) and he gave me neocate to try for 2 weeks.

Oh that is great!  I hope it helps.  Make sure to give it at least 2wks.  We started to see improvement after about 1wk and then it continued getting better.  Is he on any reflux meds?  Abby was on 7.5mg 2x's per day of Prevacid solutabs.  If he isn't on isn't I would suggest also asking to try something.  Usually they start with an H2 Blocker like Zantac or Axid.  A lot of babies don't get a lot of relief from them and move onto a PPI med like Prevacid or Prilosec.

Good Luck!

Its not that unusual to have reactions to nutramigen as it is not dairy free its just that the proteins that are broken down. We tried this in Menorca as James had run out of neocate advance as he was drinking far more than normal. James's eczema flared terrible, his lips puffed up and he had stomach pain.

I hope the neocate works for your daughter.

We had pepti junior where the proteins are not broken down totally, and Abbi reacted horribly to it, (and still does) the Neocate worked really well for us

well he has the Neocate OK, back up to 2 x 8oz bottles a day plus 6oz in the night. I've decided to try a new approach today, and make all his meals for a few days from milk to get more into him. Up to yet he's had about 23 oz today (had porridge, fruit with babyrice and fruit custard) but has just refused his bedtime bottle so will probably want a night feed again. I so wish someone could say this is what you need to do! as I feel like such an amateur at this. Scrap the bit about the last bottle, he just started crying and then took nearly 6oz, so he's now had about 29oz today!Hopefully if I can get him having daytime bottles again, I can start introducing more food again.

well it didn't work, had a really, really, really bad night. He stated waking really early on ended up feeding again at 10.30pm (4oz) and he then slept for a few hours but started waking again from about 1.30am and I gave in and fed him at 4.30 (4oz). He finally fell asleep at 5.20 and slept until 8am. I felt so low, I just laid in bed crying at 5am. I really can't take much more of this. I had planned on going to a baby group this morning just to get out, but thats off now, I just want to go back to bed.

My nearly 3 year old still has a cup of neocate during the night as this is all he eats apart from raisins. I think sometimes its worth giving 1 or 2 feeds during the night if it means they are more settled. It is hard though and I have to admit it would be nice to have my son sleep through the night but at the moment it is not practical.

if he just woke due to hunger had a bottle and went back down I could cope with that. Its all the other wakes in between.

I really feel for youand wish I could help. Again our son does this due to his eczema and we can often be awake for hours at a time. I am sorry I had misunderstood your post and thought that you had had a bad night as you were trying to stop the night feeds. I am so sorry.

no worries, why does no one warn you that some babies don't sleep? everyone always says they'll start sleeping through from 12 weeks, as if!
