Husband modified teat - good idea or not???!!!! time sensitive!
« on: September 02, 2007, 12:45:06 pm »
Hi,

Not sure if this is a breast or bottle question really!!! I am breastfeeding mainly, and doing a bottle of ebm dream feed which seems to work fine - after 3 nights. (baby is 3.5 weeks old)
The first night, husband dreamfed for 20 minutes, and he was sucking but hb checked bottle in the light of the other room, and none had come out - poor little soul was sucking away in his sleep and getting NONE! HB did something with a knife and the teat, and now the bottle drips about 3 drops if you turn it upside down. Is this really bad? I can see some posts about avoiding fast flow teats but it seems okay??? Just wanted to confirm!

also today we were round a friends having lunch and decided to give him a bottle of EBM. He took 2 oz and now I'm scared he won't want my breast, as he has only been bottlefed whilst asleep as a df before, today we did it in the cold light of day.......what do I do if he doesnt want my breast at 3pm?

We've had to do that with bottles before, the hole just hadn't pierced so baby was sucking away and nothng was coming out! Watch closely how he feeds from the bottle to make sure he's not gagging, but I'm sure it will be fine.

I would watch that the flow is not too fast for your lo.  They say that if you are going to make an extra hole in the teat that you use a steralised pin to make a small hole.  Might be better to do this instead of using a knife to make a bigger hole.  You want your lo to suck on the teat, not get used to the milk dripping down his throat.

A lot of mums do combination feeds and have not had any problems switching between breast and bottle.  Let us know how you get on with the 3PM feed.  Majority of babies prefer breast to bottle, so should not think that you will have a problem, especially since you have established breast feeding.

HTH's please keep us posted on how you get on.

Hi there, just wanted to add that I am sure that breast fed babies do do better on a slower flow bottle, as when they are breastfeeding they work harder for milk, so it is best to have a bottle where they do have to "work" at little bit, or they may see the bottle as a more attractive method of feeding
