Food that causes gas
« on: September 04, 2007, 17:35:29 pm »
Hi there ladies.  I am wondering if you can help me out.  My dd is having some gas issues and I was wondering if you could let me know what food you had to avoid when you were bf?  Any other tricks to help her out would be great.  I am not sure if it matters but she is 6 weeks old.

Thanks for your help.

Apparently, dairy could cause gas.  I had the same problem so I stopped taking dairy for 2 weeks to see and my DS was a lot better.  HTH

Gas can also be caused by a latch issue i.e. a latch that isn't a complete seal where a baby is literally taking in air as they feed that then needs to come out. Or if a baby is bobbing on and off they make take in more air. So just review your latch too.
Also positioning makes a difference i.e. make sure the upper body isn't lower than the bottom half (which I did myself on a pillow until someone pointed it out ::))
Oversupply and overactive letdown are also common contributors (this can mean a higher proportion of thinner foremilk which contains much more lactose and contributes more to gas).

Infact overall the management of breastfeeding is much more a common cause of gas than a reaction to some food stuff entering the mother's bloodstream and then her milk.

There's a discussion here:

"Formula-feeding moms never think it was what the cow ate the day she was milked, months ago!"

I think dairy is the most common culprit if there is a dietary issue - specifically either a reaction to a dairy protein or lactose.

Emma has some great advice.  I would start there.  However, I used to find that broccoli and cauliflower would make my little guy gassy and extra stinky.  :P  That's how I knew it was definitely a food issue and not just a latch or bottle issue.

Thanks ladies.  I am using a nipple shield and after reading your replies, I think maybe my dd is taking in air from the latch.  I will try to make sre the latch is better.
Thanks again.
