Is this a milk allergy/intolerance?
« on: September 06, 2007, 13:01:34 pm »
My dd will be 11 months soon and I decided this morning that I would introduce an oz of whole milk in her bottle of formula.  Ever since I fed her (an hour ago) she has been spitting up curddled milk---looks like cottage cheese and stinks!!!  She doesn't usually spit up anymore.

The wierd thing is I can feed her cheese, yo baby yogurt which is made with whole milk, etc and there are no problems.

Should I continue to introduce the whole milk?  Thanks for any advice.

Would seem surprising for her to have such an extreme reaction when she doesn't react to dairy in other forms: formula, cheese, yoghurt etc. Does she seem under the weather in other ways?

I would probably have one more go with the whole milk just to see if there is definitely a link - but leave it a few days. JMO. I know 12 months is usually the recommendation in the UK and US so you're not in a rush.

I agree with you, especially since she can tolerate cheese and yogurt and loves it.  She is/has been on Nutrimagen formula...its hypoallergenic and she was mainly put on it because of excessive gas and spitting up.

I think I will try again on Saturday and see what happens.  If she still is spitting up curddled milk, should I just wait till she is 12 months to try?

Would she have gone on the hypoallergenic stuff because of an initial dairy problem? So perhaps the gas and spit up was a sign of a dairy problem? :-\
I would give it a go on Saturday and if you are clear you are seeing a link maybe run it by your doctor before trying again. Fingers crossed.

I've heard that cheese and yoghurt is a bit different. If she has a lactose problem for example - hard cheeses and yoghurt have lower amounts of lactose compared to actual milk.

See what her next poo is like (TMI!!)

It is possible that she is reacting to the milk if she was on a hypoallergenic formula before. There are some children that can tolerate yogurt and cheese but not milk. I would give it another chance and if the same thing happens then you will have your answer.

That makes sense about digesting the cheese and yogurt more than milk.  The hypoallergenic formula already has the proteins found in milk broken down...I don't know if it that is a lactose thing or not.

I just spoke to my mom and she said I did the same thing when I was a baby and she had to put me on goats milk.

I know that formula is supposed to be the primary nutrition up until one, but what happens after one?  Do they just get milk at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, no bottles?

They can still have milk in bottles/cups. In the UK it is recomended that they have 20oz of milk a day. I know quite a few people that have used goats milk with great success other children still react. I think its worth giving it a try.

Having said that the recomendation is 20oz of milk a day my dd would not drink a lot of milk so we substituted it with dairy products. Here is a guideline which os off another topic on this site.

MILK: 4 SERVINGS
A serving equals 1/2 cup of whole milk or 1/2 cup of full-fat yogurt or 1 1/2 ounces of cheese (approximately 1 inch square)

I hope this helps.

My dd was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy at 6 weeks of age (she'd get blood in her stool) so she was bf'd and I had to give up all milk products. Just after 12 months she was able to tolerate yogurt but still not cow's milk so we had her on soy milk (and she was still bf until 18 months). It wasn't until about 16 months that she was able to tolerate cow's milk.

Just echoing what others have said....kids can handle some cheese and yogurt and yet not be able to drink full on milk.  My pediatrician told me that the only way to tell if my dd still had an allergy to milk would be to give her straight milk.  I asked about yogurt and cheese and she said that many kids can tolerate those items.  I would wait to try milk again, at least a month.  If it happens again that she spits up, I wouldn't give her milk for several months.  The more exposure they have to the offending food item the more the body reacts to it, making it harder for the child to grow out of the allergy.  My dd drinks soy milk and has soy yogurt.  She has had a bit of regular yogurt and cheese and hasn't had a bad reaction.  HTH...

thanks everyone for all the advice.  I am going to hold off with the milk like you guys suggested.  I did just give her yogurt this morning, and she tolerates that just fine.

For the mothers that give there children soy or goat milk, do you have to supplement with Vit. D?

Abby's GI told us that cow's milk has more milk proteins in it then cheese or yogurt.  That could def be the reason why she can tolerate the cheese and yogurt and not the whole milk.
