when does the one nap decrease?
« on: September 16, 2007, 19:48:06 pm »
hi  there,
just wondering when most young toddlers naps decrease?
we are having 1.5hr naps this week. they were at one time 2hrs 10min. I have been attempting to leave him in there the extra 1/2hr or so to rest and play. we are at abut 5.25-5.5hrs A time in the morning. maybe he needs more like 5hrs?
we havn't had much success with adding to the night sleep. he is generally only sleeping 11hrs or so, 7:30-6:30., then nap at 11:45/12.

he is now 20months or so.

11 hours is very normal for night time sleep at this age.

My DS is 26 months old, and follows a very similar routine.  He is in bed for 12:00 midday, and naps anywhere from an hour to 2 hours depending on how tired he is.

What time does your DS wake up in the morning, and what time does he go to bed at night?

thanks!

well our routine has really been changing!

typically he is in bed by 6:45 or 7 depending on the nap length, and hopefully asleep by 7:30 and awake by 6:30 or so, then stays in crib til 7am. if the nap was short then bedtime is earlier but he may or may not fall asleep before 7:30 (and definately not before 7pm regardless of his nap length)
lunch at 11:20, bed for 11:45/12 (depending if he woke before 6:30)

hmmm, Layla, so you think he is a bit young for a 1.hr nap?

I'm just undecided. Noah really only averaged 12.5-13hrs at the age of like 11months--so maybe expecting 13hrs at his age is unrealistic.  :-\

the other thing that started happening in August was 2hr play sessions in the middle of the night at like 4am, following a normal night and normal nap, this was awful and then he would get like 10hrs at night and a 2hr nap.

yestredays nap was only 1hr 40min,
he was asleep by 7:30, woke and coughed for 5min at 5am and then straight back to sleep til 6:30, previously if he woke at 5am he would probably have been up for 1hr.

so today he woke at 6:30am, in crib til 7am
nap was at 11:45 but he fell asleep at 12, napped til 1:30, stayed in crib til 2pm
I layed him down at 6:40, and he seemed the perfect amount of cuddly/tired that he would be asleep within 15min. not so...its 7:30pm and I just heard him again.
so he is either OT, needing a longer windown (difficult at such an early hour) or I put him to bed at 6pm (which seems cruel since he is still happily playing). we've never had much for windown but maybe it is time.

DS1 went from 1.5-2 hour nap to no nap, over night at 28 months.  He hasn't napped consistantly since.

Do you think he is spending too much time in the crib? I don't think he's too young for 1.5hr nap but it all depends on how he is during the day. Does he seem to need more sleep, is he tired by late afternoon?

Some babies sleep more when they get their dose of exercise & I can vouch for that cause about an hour before her nap Isabella was running around in the backyard & slpet for 1.5hrs whereas its only been around 45mins-1hr long.

I think 6pm is a little early for sleep so I would aim around 6:45-7pm.

If he's been on av 13hrs since 11months then it could just be that he doesn't need as much sleep. Is there anything else going on like molars or eye teeth?

yes I think there are 2nd year molars coming and he is just getting over a cold.

I here what you are saying about too much time in the crib, but 7am up is about as early as I want, usually its only about 30min in the morning, as he typically wakes about 6:30. we always make sure he has had lots of activity in the am, I might go out for a 1hr or so, but I'm typically home 1hr or more before lunch and nap.

honestly I find it hard to tell if he is tired or not in the afternoon. he is so spirited. yestrday afternoon, he was really happy all afternoon and through supper. I only saw the first tired sign when I told him it was bedtime and during windown etc. its like he hides it.

he takes a long time to fall asleep at night , so I try to have him in his crib for 30min before I actually want him to be asleep by. I think this is typical at his age.

last night I think he was alseep about 7:30pm, but wide awake as of 6am, jumping in his crib and playing until 7am when we all got up. aaargh!
