What worked for our 21 mth dd.
« on: September 25, 2007, 04:40:54 am »
Just thought I'd share what worked for my dd when she suddenly started to have sleep issues at bedtime...

She was a perfect sleeper since she was 6-8 weeks old (thanks BW) and suddenly, at 21 months, she would FREAK out when we put her down at night. The first few nights I ended up laying down on the floor in her room, it would take her up to 2 hours to fall asleep. Within days I was able to move to a chair, half inside and half outside her doorway. Dh and I would take turns. I finally decided enough was enough and started to leave the lights on low (dimmer switch) AND let her select 2 books to take to bed. As soon as we started this we no longer had to sit in her doorway, we would tell her that we would come back and check in on her after she was done reading. She would fall asleep within 10 minutes of "reading" to her dolls (at 8:10 sharp). So, for those of you having bedtime issues with an older toddler, it could be a new fear of the dark, just a thought.

Thanks for posting Marian.  It helps when people have a success story to share.   :)

Thank you Marian...this might very well help us out. Though DD doesn't have problems with going to sleep on her own (though it does take about an hour and we do leave books in her bed as well) our issues are mainly nightwakings, and like you she has always been a perfect sleeper until 19.5 months old.
I also saw your original post regarding your DD's troubles...didn't she have night wakings as well?

No, she didn't have night wakes, she just fought sleep from 7:30 (which was her perfect original bedtime) until as late as 10pm some nights! She did have one nw where she woke crying but I think it was a fluke. She also started waking early, just after 6am and she'd scream/cry. I always assumed she woke at 7am when I went in but maybe she was always up early but quiet. Once I started leaving the light on the screaming/crying stopped, if she wakes early she will sit quietly and play with her dolls or look at the books left in from night. I also realised that at 22 months, 7:30 was too early for her to go to sleep, bumping it to 8pm really helps and now she's asleep within 10 minutes.

Thats a great post Marian - I had to do the same with Isabella (she was a little older though) & she has gone from screaming her head off (she was very scared of her room) to falling asleep talking to herself again. I switch the dimmer off though once she is asleep & she doesn't seem to mind :)

Think I could be preventing her from getting into a deep sleep with the dimmer on? Dh and I have been debating this. I swear I can see the slightest light with my eyes shut and it prevents me from sleeping so I wonder if it's the same for her but if she wakes before 7am and the room is darkish she freaks.

Well that was the reason I started turning it off. The same night as she asked for the light she also woke in the middle of the night asking for it to be turned off. I am the same... a light can be on when I'm falling asleep but if I wake in the middle I can also see the slightest night.

You can give it a go??? Maybe try turning it off once she's asleep... :-\

I'm afraid to ruin a good thing! But, at the same time I hate her sleeping with the light on even if it's the dimmer. I tried leaving it on lower tonight when I put her down and she freaked so I quickly turned it up. I'm going to go in before dh and I go to bed and turn it down very low to see what happens in the morning. Wish me luck!
