18 MO Nap Dilemma
« on: September 27, 2007, 11:54:46 am »
Dear all,

First of all I just want to add my support to the BW community and say that it is a real godsend and has helped me in the past enormously. Thank you!

My DD is 18 MO next week and goes to nursery 3 days a week when I am at work.

Her routine on a nursery day is as follows
6-6.30 Wakeup
6.45-7 Get up and has milk (still from a bottle)
8.15-8.30 Breakfast at nursery around
10 Mid morning snack of fruit
11.30-11.45 lunch
12.15 is nap until 2pm (usually manages 1hr 40 mins)
3.45 high tea (light meal)
4.30 pick her up
5.15 tea at home (another light meal)
6.15 up stairs for bath, milk and bed
7pm at the latest tucked up in bed and normally sleeps through!

Yes I know I am very lucky!  :) My dilemma is what time to put her down on non nursery days now that she only has 1 nap?

She generally has the same routine as at nursery except she might sleep in until 7.30am occasionally.  But I can't seem to keep her up until after lunch as she usually ready for nap between 10am and 11am. If she goes down in the morning she will have lunch when she wakes (between 12 and 1pm). I have also tried keeping her up and having lunch at 11.30 then a nap at 12.

If she has an early nap she gets very tired late afternoon and we end up bringing bedtime forward. If she has a late nap after lunch she gets tired in the morning and won't eat much of her lunch.

She has most of her naps in her cot as she will not sleep in a buggy but does sleep in the car if she is tired.

I understand most toddlers have a pm nap so I guess this is what we need to aim for but does anyone have any ideas how to get her to stay up longer?

Thanks, Yota

hi there
our routine looks like this:
6.30am wake & milk
7.45am breakfast
11.15am lunch
12noon nap 2hrs
2pm (very) small snack
5pm dinner
6.30pm bath
7pm bed- asleep by 7.20ish.

I always get outside with Sophie in the mornings, either with the buggy to the shops, or we walk to the park so she can have a run about; something to make sure she gets some fresh air and exercise- the fresh air perks her up so she can go a bit longer, and then when we get home it's nice and warm indoors and she's so ready for her nap she conks out!
At nursery (2 days pw) they have lunch at 12.15 and by the time lunch is cleared away and they get them ready for naptime, it's gone 1. Then she sleeps till about 2.30 usually. She's still in bed asleep at the usual time in the evening though.
I honestly don't know how she gets through the long morning- I guess there is lots to see and do so she just keeps going. I know they always take them outside to play in the morning so I really do think that helps too. I find if she is tired and bored that's a horrid combination, but if I can keep her occupied and entertained I can easily keep her up longer.
