If you use the Hyperlink button in the reply mode or the Preview mode it works as well.

Maybe this is a dumb idea.  But I wonder if you could make formula into baby ice cream.  I'll bet my little teether would really enjoy that.   :)

Hmmm... I bet you could!  I just don't think you'd want all the extra sugar it typically takes to make ice cream...

How about just freezing it on a popsicle stick, or in an icecube tray and put in the baby-safe feeder? J also eats peaches frozen in the feeder.

Well gave Alice avocado today.  It was sooooo ripe.  It was falling off the skin, so there really weren't any skin issues.  She was also able to pick up the bits without the skin on.  Maybe I'm just underestimating what she can do for herself.  She made a funny face initially, but kept coming back to it and I think she actually ate some.  It is very messy though.  Also there was a lot left over, so I've put it in a container with a small amount of lemon juice over it and we'll see what it's like tomorrow.  So all in all I think it's been a success.

Re: avocado and skin or no skin.  We have avocado 'mushed up' and spread on rice cakes or toast and that seems to work pretty well.

Saw the Health Visitor today for Anna's 8 month check and she was really positive about Anna's diet and the fact that she has got on OK with self-feeding.  So I feel greatly encouraged!!  I know it doesn't *really* matter what the 'officials' think but since there wasn't much encouragement from them about BLW in the beginning I feel really pleased that they don't have any cause to complain about Anna's development or weight after a couple of months of solids.

Probably a stupid question, but can someone point me at the recipe for the infamous 'sausages' everyone was raving about a couple of months ago (think they had chicken and apple in but there were several variants as I recall). I'm sure it is somewhere really obvious but I've looked everywhere in the sticky posts and recipe threads, and tried everything I can think of in the search box, and can't find it.  Thanks!
Cathy

Cathy, that's great that you had such a positive response from your HV.  Do you think they might be interested enough to read up about it and maybe suggest it to parents as the way forward for weaning?  Or is that just a step too far at the moment?  Good idea about spreading the avocado onto things.

Regards the infamous sausage recipe.  It's on the first page of BLW support thread 1.  It's towards the bottom and is in pink from Freya'sMum.  Hope you find it.

We were having chilli tonight and so gave Alice some of the rice.  She couldn't quite pick it up and put it in her mouth, so I was putting it in her mouth for her.  I didn't see any come back out again though.  Don't get too excited, she literally probably had about 6 grains of rice.

Bryony, hope Katie is much better and is starting to get back on track with everything.

The famous sausage recipe (ROFLMAO) is in Recipes titled 'Where's that Chicken Finger/Frittata Recipe?' - it's a few posts down now so I might sticky it with a new title for easy access ;D

Okay, I'm sorry for just jumping in here without actually reading EVERYTHING, but honestly, these BLW threads are LONG...and I'm a mommy of 3 small children, okay?
 ;) ;D
So here's my question.  My little guy is (well, my ticker says exactly) just over 7 months old.  We have NOT been successful with purees at all.  He's happily eaten cereal with fruit or veggies (doesn't seem to really like the veggies) about 6 times in his life.  Someone recommended this and I've been checking it out and trying it with him.  He loves bananas, wasn't fond of apple or carrot.  I've made him toast, but after having to jump up about 3 times and get ready to do the Heimlich (he puked out the stuck bread, thank God), I'm not too keen on the idea of toast.  I'm looking for more things that I can give him.  I also don't want to rule out spoon feeding because there are many good foods I don't want to have smeared all over the house (yogurt, oatmeal, etc.).  The past 2 mornings I've given him instant oatmeal (plain) with mashed banana and made it real chunky and he seemed to love it!  He squished it through his fingers while I got a spoon here and there into his mouth.  The other thing I'm concerned about is that I don't want to just be all willy-nilly about giving him whatever.  I don't want to give him foods that will give him trouble, and honestly, I just don't remember when they should start with meat!  You'd think I'd know these things by now!
So, any recommendations on foods your lo's have really enjoyed?  He ate a biter biscuit at dinner tonight and LOVED it...he actually ate the whole thing (he's got NO teeth).  And they're hard enough that I didn't have to worry about the choking.
Thanks in advance for the help!!

I know I just said this in my previous post, but don't any of you have problems with your lo's choking?  That's my only fear with going full bore with feeding him whatever I can.  He doesn't have the pinscher grasp yet, so I'm not sure how giving little food would work, but honestly, the thought of him choking scares the bejeebers out of me!!

Okay...I have to come out of the closet. I have been lurking on this thread since Grae was 5.5 months old....that's like a month and a half people! All that reading deserves at least one post.

I practise MLW (Mommy Lead Weaning), so I don't know if I belong here. :-[  From the beginning Grae hated the spoon, and the only way I could get her to eat was to get her to chomp down on a piece of ripe fruit, or well cooked veggie that I was holding. She LOVES avocado, and I cut it into fingers and hold it out for her to eat.  We do pears, avocados, blueberries, peas, bananas, yams, brocolli, apples, peaches (when they were in season), and plums this way. I also gave her chicken that way too. I think pureeing meat is just plain wrong. She eats oatmeal and soft veg puree off the spoon now, it's both really.

I want to let her grab these foods on her tray...but I am a bit of a contol freak (ask the gals in my BC). I guess I just have to let go of the mess issue..that and the stare down. What do you do if you're not actively feeding? I don't want to take my eyes off of her when there's food around.

Here I am.....

Hi Lyndsey and Janelle - welcome!

Only time for a quick reply...

Choking - no, Katie has never choked. She gags sometimes but just coughs it out again. Her highchair is very "upright" so it then just falls out of her mouth  :P

Fave foods - tBH I give Katie whatever is around / whatever I'm having. Her favourites are fish, bread and butter, toast, pear...  she ignores most fruit and veg as if it's just not there. Or picks it up and dumps it on the floor.

In terms of what do I do - I'm usually eating my meal at the same time  :D

Lyndsey - I love the idea of MLW  LOL

Hi Lyndsy and Janelle,

I'm with Bryony.  Don't worry about the choking issue, they have a gag reflex and they'll just spit stuff out.  They will gag, but don't worry about it, they'll even gag when they're swallowing.  When Alice gags, I know she's eaten something.

Foods, try to start with food that can mush easily, so they get used to that and then move on to tougher foods.  It just may be that toast is not right yet.  You can put pureed fruits etc onto toast and spreadable cheeses.  There is a post feeding solid foods, at the top, Recipes and there are finger food ideas for younger babies.  My Health Visitor put me on to this form of weaning and she said that you can give them whatever food you want, just avoid the foods you avoided during pregnancy unless there are allergies in the family, then avoid the foods which can cause allergies.

Alice has had, mashed potato with peas, avocado, pear, banana, plum, rice, pasta, toast, bread, petit filous, roasted courgette, carrot and sweet potato.  I'm going to try her on kiwi fruit too at some point.  We're back to the mushy stage after a nasty tummy bug stopped us from BLW for three weeks, while her poos went back to normal.

I put the spears on to her tray one at a time and let her suck at it or smear it on the tray or over her face.  I use a normal bib under a full bib with arms.  Also I put a shower curtain on the floor to collect those stray pieces.

I'm not going to cook her any dishes until she's more practised at eating, because she's not actually consuming a great deal, you do need to be very patient.  My HV told me it can take months for them to really get the hang of it.

I love the fact that we both have breakfast and lunch together and I don't have to sit with a spoon and feed her.

Hope some of that has helped.

Pauline

People are coming up with ideas all the time on this board, so keep watching out for the odd recipe idea.  One thing that someone mentioned a while back was apple rings, because they're easy to hold.  Or baked apple.  I

Hi Janelle and Lyndsy!!
I do a combo approach too, some finger foods, some purees, some mommy led weaning!

The past 2 mornings I've given him instant oatmeal (plain) with mashed banana and made it real chunky and he seemed to love it!  He squished it through his fingers while I got a spoon here and there into his mouth.  I just don't remember when they should start with meat!
I think that sounds great!  Now you can try mixing other things in with the oatmeal, since you know he likes it.  If it were me, I would keep the banana in there since it's familar and a favorite.  But you can add, mashed up avocado, sweet potato,  squash, baked apple, ripe pear/peach/plum...
When they start meat seems to vary by pediatrician and country.  Mine said 9 months but there are plenty of ladies on here who are giving their 7 month olds meat and fish.
Also, try MLW like Lyndsy suggested and finger feeding (using your finger as a spoon).
I give Meghan Cheerios, puffed brown rice cereal, Kix, rice Chex cereal, crackers, rice cakes, baby puffs, fruity booty,
freeze dried banana, apple, mango and apricots, pieces of ripe pear and peach, avocado, baked apples (I use a corer to make "sticks"), bites of baked sweet potato.  I really think those jars of baby green beans and apples are excellent- just the right softness for Meghan.  I have a real hard time getting my food baked right, especially carrots.  I don't have any idea how to steam them to the right done-ness.  So, I use the jars.  I put a few on her tray and occasionally stick one in her mouth.  She does great with this.
I also give her yogurt.  I either spoon feed it to her or give her the spoon with a little bit on it and she puts it in her own mouth.  Or I give her a sippy or bottle with the drinkable yogurt in it.

Lyndsy & Janelle,

Welcome! In the BLW FAQ I talk about the 'pure' approach and the 'modified' approach, and so far most posters have admitted to being 'modified' BLWers, and so far no BLW Police have come knocking... ;D - it really is ok to do a combination as long as you are following you los' cues about how much is enough!

Choking? Eryn never choked, having control over what she put in and when helped this I'm sure, she used her sensitive lips and gums to work out the properties of the food she was exploring before biting some off, so she knew what to expect. She's really good at moving food around her mouth and spitting out what she doesn't want to swallow (tough bits she's fed up chewing on!).

Anxious monitoring? I wrote in my first proper post on the subject that really I am a terribly complacent/neglectful mother, I just kind of ignore Eryn at mealtimes because I have 2 girls to sort out and I usually eat when they eat - it makes it so much more relaxed and sociable that way! I think you do relax with second and third kids, you have no choice, and it's been great for Eryn's confidence and independence - I'm redundant at mealtimes!
