Hi Vanessa, welcome!

What's the problem with cheese? Katie eats masses of the stuff!

And yes I thought everyone likes banana - but Katie won't touch it...

Hi Vanessa!  Good to hear from you.

Cheese, cheese, cheese.  My boys eat tonnes of the stuff.  Cheese spread was a staple to begin with - on toast, on oat cakes, on apple pieces - they love it.  I now bake cheese straws and put cheese in risotto.  They have had absolutely no problem with it at all.  It's good protein and good calories.  I do worry a bit about the salt content in cheese though but even salt I have read various things about and have come to the conclusion that as long as one is aware of it and doesn't add salt, then it's probably ok!  I'm sooo much more relaxed about things like that than I was with my first babe!!

As for cereal... my boys let me spoon feed them baby cereal mixed with fruit puree up until about 10 days ago when they started refusing even that off a spoon.  I found some Cow & Gate toddler cereal, which I soak in milk for a minute, drain and then put on their tray.  They absolutely love it.  It's a four grain one - corn, rice, wheat and oats, I think, so it's quite a good one.  And no salt or sugar added like with 'adult' cereals.  (I admit though that I've often added a couple of shreddies and some cheerios too by the end of breakfast!)

Right.  I'm off to find that sausage recipe...

'Speak' to you soon!!

Vicky

Jake is allergic to oatmeal, yeast, milk(but not other dairy), coffee, tea, mushrooms, onion, garlic,

He could not tolerate sweet potatoes or pears at 4 months but maybe he can now? Big sis was also allergic to apples and every raw fruit she ate b4 age one, and wheat, so I have to be careful. Since he has had reflux and constipation with occassional diarrhea since birth, I am worried about his digestion, so that scares me about proper solids.

Welcome Vanessa! I love to hear your stories :-*

Re cereals - we give Katie shreddies (dry) which she loves - they seem to be easy to pick up and eat.  I've tried putting a bit of EBM on them but then they go too soggy to pick up with her hands. They are pretty low in sugar and salt so I figured they would be OK!

Lovedtodeath - 4 months old is very early to start solids - might be worth trying things again that he could not tolerate at 4 months old as the digestive system often doesn't mature until around 6 months...

I don't remember what all there is to cheese with infants.  I think there are more likely to be allergies to cheese/cow dairy.  Any thing that has a greater risk for allergies you should hold off on.  Also, I believe the proteins are sometimes more difficult to digest on the younger stomachs.  I don't remember the recommendation to begin.

Since my LO was effected by my eating dairy when she was really little, I am not going to give her dairy for a REALLLY long time.  Like when she can actually tell me that her tummy hurts or something.

Welcome Vanessa!!

We do the shreddie's too - found a great one with nothing added, just wheat, then they *new and improved it* with some sugar...so she has though.  they don't taste sweet.  i did the same with some ebm/milk but she didnt like it.

Intro to dairy seems to be diff in every country, so I would go by what is rec for your country and then some if you have allergies.Alissa, one of my friends has dairy allergy so sh'es not giving her lo any dairy (she's 11months).  Her paed told her that she could keep giving formula until age 2 if she wanted to.

How's this for a *BLW MOMENT*.  We are having bfast at the moment.  I made Lil some vegemite toast, which she is kind of eating, but I had a banana waiting in the wings.  so I gave her a few bits of that to eat too.  Now when she is finished iwth the banana, she points to it and makes a noise. Do you think she is telling me what she wants.  I tell you, I could just feed this girl fruit and yoghurt all day and she would be happy.  She even recognises the yoghurt container when I take it out of the fridge.

Gave her some honey the other day - i was eating some natural yoghurt that needed some sweetening and of course L wanted some.  so I gave it to her.  not going to go overboard with it though.  She is nearly one, so most food should be ok except nuts.  Peanut butter will be a good one to be able to give her.  maybe try some celery with peanut butter in it....

...oh she is moaning for banana again....

He is six months old today. Happy birthday Jake. Went to Doc...He was 23 lbs 14 oz, Almost 29" long.  Big sis has a terrible cold and ear infection, and she is gagging on her drainage. Jake has been coughing without any food and gagged on his porridge today. (sorghum/milo, he loved it, it is very sweet, even mixed with formula) So maybe the gagging with the pancake was just a fluke. I am going to try the potato cake recipe soon. He has only been on solids for 4 days now and already fusses at breakfast and dinner until I feed him something, even though he only takes less than an ounce each time.

Thanks for your replies!

thank you for all your comments :D
ahh cheese is all fine then..  I know it all comes down to if im happy with it and if we have no reaction :)  Just stories from all places, introduce what when etc.  Im trying to stick to what Australia says about food intros, but we have only moved here from NZ so I have food theories from NZ as well ... Ok cool, so im going to investigate some cereals at the supermarket this afternoon.  will see how that goes   ::)

BTW i had no nice fruit/veg in the fridge last week so I went out and brought some 'organic' mushed baby food - it was not very nice - had no taste, no wonder DS didnt like it!  I didnt want to eat it.

tried hummus today, dipped the steamed sweet potatoes, didnt seem to mind at all.  I love the reaction babies have to changes in taste/new tastes until they think yeah its ok ill have some more.
Vanessa :)

Loved To Death -- OH MY GOSH! Your babe is a big boy!  Yeah, give him some time. It's only his 4th day on solids! I think he's doing great and some gagging is to be expected!

Love the story of Lily and the banana! Too cute!

Alissa-my ped said cheese is OK, just not milk or "cream" things. But if MJ has had dairy reactions before, you might as well hold off.

Gave the girls pears yesterday and again, I was flipping out about them choking on them. They bit off some fingernail sized bits. The pears weren't TOO soft, so the did some munching and got them down! Also did some avo slices the other day - they aren't convinced. Loved the banana slices. I rolled them in rice cereal so they could get a better handle on them. Not bad. I'm happy if they get two or three bites in!

I love this thread!  Great to hear how all the babes are doing.
Having been slightly 'forced into' BLW by the fact that my boys wouldn't eat off a spoon, I am now completely sold on the idea and would definitely go down this route with any subsequent babies we may have (however unlikely that may be!)  It was slow, and nerve-racking in the beginning but has totally paid off now.  They eat what we eat.  I'm very pleased I didn't fork out on a new blender!!

Really glad to hear you are all doing so well.

Welcome indeed, Vanessa.

Well Alice's stool sample came back with nothing in it, which was good.  So went to see the HV and she said that she probably did have a tummy bug and her system is just taking a while to settle down again.  She said to give it the rest of the week without solids and see how she goes.  Today she has only poo ed once so far and it seems more like normal.  So we'll see.  She suggested starting solids again on Monday anyway.

Lovetodeath.  How do you know your child is allergic to all these food stuffs?  Food allergies are incredibly rare and if you think he has allergies (and not intolerances, which are also very rare) then it's worth getting it checked out rather than with holding certain foods.  He shouldn't be having tea or coffee anyway, so it seems a bit strange that he's allergic to them.

Hoping that Alice is going to be back into her solids with a vengeance soon.
