Lyn, can I ask, was it you that thought about getting a doidy cup from the 3.5 month old not feeding thread?  Did you get one?  If so, what do you think?

thanks for that Alison.

Just wanted to say that after my worries of Sam not eating properly he's off on a feeding frenzy again!!!  Had his toast for breakfast which went down very well, then for lunch fishcakes, broccoli, sweetcorn and a bit of mash.  For dinner we just had some pizza then Petit Filous yogurt and he was loving it.  I don't take his savoury course away before I give him his pudding so he goes from, say, fruit back to fishcake, then back to fruit again!

He's drinking well from his Tommee Tippee sippy cup - picks it up and drinks away no problem.  Soon I think I'll start giving him his formula in it and just see how we get on as don't want him to still be drinking from a bottle at 1.  No rush though, got a few months yet.

Take care all

Pauline- it was me!  Since they aren't readily available here, I decided to try a sippy before I bought one.  She did great with it so I have put off the doidy for now.
At Meghan's pediatrician appointment on Friday, the doc said she needs to be taking at least 24 ounces of formula.  Since she's only on 4 bottles a day (she recently dropped one of her bottle feeds) and is only taking 5-6 ounces at a time, I've decided to do a combined puree/BLW approach.  I need to mix some formula(about 3-4 oz per day) in something for her.  So, for breakfast and dinner she's going to get cereal with milk, I feed her some and let her spoon feed herself as much as she wants to.  Then when the cereal is eaten I'm giving her finger foods to play with/eat.  She seems really happy with this approach.

Out of interest, what is a doidy cup? I keep seeing it mentionned in peoples' posts but don't have a clue what it is - is it the same as a sippy cup?

http://www.babyzoop.co.uk/doidy.htm

I just acquired one from a fellow BW on the free exchange, Sophie can't get on with her sippy very well, so I'll let  you know how I get on.

Lyn - why did the ped say that about her formula? Is she not putting enough weight on? Sophie doesn't have much more than that, but as long as she is steadily putting on weight, my HV is fine with her to carry on BLW. I keep reminding myself that although she is not very heavy, someone has to be on the bottom of the scale to make the averages what they are, just like some babies are bigger and much bigger! Is she happy? Sleeping ok?

Interesting!  They look great and far better for teaching drinking out of a proper cup - thanks for the link!

It is a bit odd, I guess.  She's 17.5 pounds, in the 75%tile.  I think it's mostly the iron/protein provided by the formula.  She has never taken "enough" formula, based on her weight, but has been right on this growth curve for a few months now.

Anna's got a Doidy cup which she grabs hold of VERY enthusiastically but tends to throw the contents everywhere if I'm not really firmly holding it for her.  So, she manages to eat without making so much mess that we need to change her clothes, but if I offer her water it all goes down her front and she gets SOAKED and has to be totally re-dressed!

Must admit that I therefore don't do it at every 'mealtime' - only at the 5pm one, just before bathtime.  As she's still taking 6 milk feeds a day I assume she doesn't need the liquid. Is that reasonable? Or ought she to be having regular water too?

It is strange isn't it Lyn! If she's happy and putting on weight I personally wouldn't change anything, she's obvioulsy getting nutrients from the milk she is drinking along with the great rage of foods you are offering. If your ped hadn't said anything what would you have thought?

Hello ladies, I've decided to join the thread!

We've been doing BLW (the modified approach, I do not give him any raw foods/foods I consider dangerous) since the LO was 6.5 months old.

He seems to be doing just fine -he's got two front teeth, so he manages to take bites of the foods he holds.

He manages to manipulate the foods pretty neatly into his mouth, and pushes back out bits he can't chew.

All'n'all he loves it and manages to get in much more food when I manage to give him with a spoon (he hates the spoon, very independent young man)

We've been eating mostly steamed veggies/fruit until now, I want to try some new options.
I'm going to try the sausages recipe I've seen in the 1st thread, sounds delicious.
Regarding the toast/sandwiches - seems a great idea to me!

How do you prepare the toast -isn't it a bit too hard for babies?! Or do you put it in water/milk before giving it to the LO?

Thanks a lot!
Inna

hi ishkin - welcome!  Re toast, I give it to Katie with margerine or cream cheese on - she sucks and slobbers on it till it's soft and then pulls bits off to eat...

Ha, so seems to me a toast with any kind of liquid coating would do - thina, avocado, banana purees etc. ?

Why a toast and not a sandwich then?

And another idea for sandwich coating I read somewhere - chopped tomatos with a bit of lemon and sprinkled olive oil
