Thanks Alison.  She seemed happier today.  However, the poos are still quite squidgy, I'm taking her to see the HV on Tuesday and maybe the GP if it doesn't get any better in the next couple of days.

So this is where all of the 6-12 month mommies have gotten off to!  :)

My DD is definitely showing me she would far prefer to feed herself.  She always grabs a spoon and puts it in her own mouth and the few items I've let her self feed with she goes to town on!  So, I thought I better find out the "right" things to feed her.  For example, the raw baby carrot was probably not a good idea.  Although she gnaws and gnaws, she will never get more than a nutritive lick!

Cathy- re: the extra bottle feeds.  I think that 2:00 feed should be closer to 3:00 and you should be able to drop the 5:00.  I've noticed my DD may get hungry at that hour, but I'll offer her solids instead.

My only comment is I cannot believe the kinds of things your LOs are eating!!!  It's amazing what a difference a couple of months make!
I probably will not feed our DD cow milk product ever.  Or at least not until she's old enough to tell me that her tummy hurts.  She had colic symptoms REALLY bad for a week when she was 2 weeks old.  When I stopped eating dairy, she stopped having symptoms.  She has only recently been able to tolerate me eating dairy.  If that's what happens second hand?  I have no interest in giving her cheese, yogurt or the like any time in the near or far future.  i'm going to hunt out the first thread, but I assume there is something about what foods are good to give at first?

Thanks for the tip about pesto rather than tomato based sauces. I can't stand the stuff but it would be good for her not to acquire all my dislikes by default so will definitely try it!

In the spirit of feeling braver about mess, I've introduced yoghurt since we have no dairy problems.  I load up the spoon and pass it to her and she gets (some of) it into her mouth.  It gets everywhere so we do it at 5pm just before her bathtime, and she loves it. I am having fun with it, too.  It confirms my suspicions that she'd never let me feed her off a spoon - it has to be in her hand before it goes anywhere near her mouth.

Has anyone else noticed that messy LOs make them enjoy mess, too?  I find myself sticking my fingers into the yoghurt pot and then licking it off them, when she's between spoonfuls, rather than getting my own spoon. I'd NEVER have done that before. But maybe it's just me  ;D

Also, I discovered today that sweet potato gets to just the right consistency for finger food if you steam it in the same way as you would do carrot. Wouldn't have expected that so passing it on in case anyone else wants to try it.

We're now pretty much settled into 5 milk feeds a day - 4 proper daytime ones at 7, 11, 3 and bedtime, and then the DF.  So thanks for the tips.

Welcome Alissa :)

Try this link for some finger food ideas...

https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=95978.0

...my los' diets have very little dairy in, only cheese really and you don't have to get cow's cheese these days so it is avoidable! We have a wheat free diet in our house mainly (my doing, I'm intolerant) but still achieve a healthy balance most of the time!

Have fun with food,

Ax

PS - raw carrot, apple, celery etc make great teething food, cool and hard for gnawing on, and satisfying when bits do break off!

Hi, sorry I've been missing a lot but just been doing my thing with feeding Sam and seem to be doing just fine!  Had a friend from Berlin over yesterday which was great - I introduced her to BLW a few months ago and she said it's just the best thing!  Did my pasta with sauce special and Jess was rather surprised when I just put a handful of it straight onto our dining room table for Sam - did the same for Roberta and they both woofed it down!  Lots of satisfied chompy noises and grubby hands/faces but they both looked sooooo happy!!!!  Jess was however surprised by how much milk Sam gets as Roberta only gets fed morning and evening (bf) and has water the rest of the day so she's not doing the strict BLW as I am.

Anyhow, my question is as Sam gets older (he'll be 10 months on the 19th), what do I have to think about doing as he approaches one.  I know it's a way off yet but I like to plan my attack!  Do I end up dropping a milk feed and just give him formula first thing and last thing and have water the rest of the time?  I just like to know what I"m going to be doing!!  I know 'until one it's just for fun', but what do I do when he is one?  Sorry if this seems a daft question!!!!

Hope you're all well and lovely to see so many new names - welcome to you all!

Ali - I was wondering that too!

BTW I think it's standard practice in much of Europe to drop to milk feeds just morning and evening quite early - several ladies in my birth group (on Facebook) are from Europe and they are all on two milk feeds a day plus 3 solid meals.

Glad it's all going well!  Here it finally feels that Katie has started really eating. She has about 15 shreddies for breakfast each morning (and they all disappear), not much for lunch, and usually some meat or fish for dinner in the evening. And it doesn't all come out the other end completely unchanged any more either :P :P

OOh I was wandering that too Ali !!  We are still virtually on 4 Bf's a day but Lydia is going great guns with food I'm sure she doesn't take that much on at least one of those feeds.

That leads me to another question...portion control.  I know how her milk is still priority so I am constantly in two minds at meal times how much food to give her.  Just wandered what other views on this is.  I'm sure she would graze on whatever food was in front of her if I let her!!  Should I just keep offering and trust she will tell me when she's full or limit what I give??

I thought that with BLW the assumption is the LO knows better than we do how much they need to eat.  Actually, I think if you're paying attention to your LO, even with puree feeding, they kind of give you that sign of, enough mommy!!

I read the other thread on different foods for LO.  Conceptually, I like BLW.  I gave her banana, pear, and avocado yesterday morning. Not so interested in the pear, but went to town on the banana and avocado.  I know I chose messy things to give her, but does it tend to get that messy with other solids as well?

Alissa - it varies!  Carbohydrate things (bread sticks, rice cakes, bread, crispbreads...) are pretty non-messy, as are ham, fish, roast chicken, apple etc.   Anything with a sauce is VERY messy  :P :P

Hi all!  Sorry I haven't been around for a while.  We all had a tummy bug last week  :'( and have been catching up ever since!  Thankfully all ok now although the boys are still managing to produce some astoundingly smelly nappies!   :(

Alison - you say that you do wheat free in your household.  What sort of breads have you found successful as finger foods?  I'm finding myself giving too much toast and/or sandwiches because they eat them so well.  But I don't want to go overboard on wheat really.  I made some buckwheat blinis last week, but honestly, they didn't go down that great!  (Ella and I both thought they were yummy though!)

I've been feeling under pressure from various people recently to drop breastfeeds and increase solids intake so that they sleep through the night.   :-\   How do you all deal with these sort of comments?  On a good day, I totally trust that my babies know what's best for them and that if I continue to offer them milk and a variety of finger foods, then they will work out their own balance.  But on other days, I worry that I'm not doing what's best for them.

Well they are in bed from 7pm till between 6-7am.  They settle beautifully in the evening.  If I leave them to their own devices, they wake up for a feed at least twice (each), which is a lot of trips for me down the stairs into their bedroom.  Sometimes I think they use night feeds to re-connect with me and get some precious one-to-one time that is perhaps lacking during the day.  Other times, they guzzle down their milk and I can hear it falling into their empty tummies IYKWIM!!  We have tried PU/PD and extending the length between feeds but we never get anywhere with it and usually end up waking big sister (she's 2) and getting even less sleep ourselves.   :(  So I'm kind of going with the flow now.  Tiring though!!

Thankfully they do not wake up and stay awake for extended periods of time.  If I feed them on demand, they'll normally be back asleep again within ten minutes.

I forget who it was, Kimberley maybe, who asked about "out and about" food in the 1st thread.  I found two things that I think would work quite well for this.  Freeze dried banana and green bean "chips."  I found them at Whole Foods, not sure what the non-US equivalent is.  They weren't very expensive, 99 cents for the bananas and 3.99 for a biggish box of bean.  The green beans are just baked with a tiny bit of salt and canola oil.  I'm sure you could make this if you were so inclined!

I would love to figure out how to freeze dry fruits and veggies, is that something you can do at home- anyone know?  Those bananas are fantastic!  But I can't eat all of the baby's food, LOL!

For dinner tonight we had potato (just boiled tender), cantaloupe (one of her favorite foods) and Cheerios.  She's not feeling so good, but she did ok-ish on these.  Mostly smeared them in her ears and hair, but a bit went down I think.  She's getting much better at actually eating the cantaloupe rather than just chewing on it.  I also baked her some apples (400 degrees for 45 minutes) and she ate it right up.

Is it ok to give wheat?  I've noticed a lot of people aren't giving it. I've been giving her toast, bagel, crackers, wheat germ, shredded wheat, etc.  Should I back off on this?
thanks!

Hi everyone!!! (esp the newbies)

I've been a bit MIA this week as I've been busy with other baby issues etc.  I also was concerned about the pressure of dropping bfs since L is turning one this month - MJMom was kind enough to remind me on my concerned thread, that if I BLW, then she takes the lead (thanks Alissa).  I think we all have that magic one year mark in our brains, where it seems that they *should* be eating a certain amount of solids, they *should* be having a perfectly balanced diet, we *should* be weaning (the older they get the more pressure I think you get to stop bf, even if it's not overt comments).  Not to mention 'oh, she's not crawling yet???'  Grrr... >:(  I'm just going to continue on as I have been, increasing her food as we go.  Now that she is better her food intake has certainly increased, and her hand to mouth movements are so much better.  She loves picking up big chunks of dinner and stuffing it in her face...!!!   Tried some potato salad last ngith, but no,  she doesn't seem to like potato... very strange..... I made meatloaf this morning so will see how she goes with that.  If it goes well I'll post it as it came from a baby recipe book and soo easy to make  - not to mention tastes great!!!

Have fun everyone  :)
Aleesa.....
