That sounds great Aleesa.  I'm trying to find things my other two will eat as well!  I think you're on the right track.  Just follow her lead, she won't starve herself.  Lots of people nurse on demand for 2 or 3 years.  So, there is a wide range of "normal."  And as far as developmental milestones, there is such a wide range of "normal" for that too.  But by the time they're 3 or so, you really can't tell who did things early or late.

I think we all have that magic one year mark in our brains, where it seems that they *should* be eating a certain amount of solids, they *should* be having a perfectly balanced diet, we *should* be weaning (the older they get the more pressure I think you get to stop bf, even if it's not overt comments).  Not to mention 'oh, she's not crawling yet???'  Grrr... >:(
Aly- you're welcome!  Sometimes people have no idea what they say is hurtful.  Ironically, some of those offenders are mommy's!!!  Especially when those mommys have differing opinions and read a different "experts" opinion on what is right.  Stick to your guns!  You're the mommy and what you say goes!  In the mean time, ((HUGS!!)) for having to put up with that nonsense as well meaning as it may be.  ::)  They are coming from a good place... just not from the same opinion as you!

Lyn- I've heard there is a greater risk for allergies with wheat and it's safer to stay away.  But then aren't cookies and the like made from flour also made from wheat?  As most flour that is not specified wheat flour?   ??? :-\

Vicky- did you ever DF your kids?  Wonder if that would help at least one of your NW's?

Lyn - thansk for the suggestion, I've never seen them but I'll check our the health food store I think.

We're really struggling with the relfux here so dealing with trying to keep her milk intake up, but also to get some solids in her cos it helps the relfux and her constipation! ARRGGHHH!!!! I've been resorting to spoon feeding the past couple of days cos bless her she is soo hungry but i think the foods she really enjoys self feeding are making her reflux worse (pears, peaches) and she's in pain whilst eating. I spoon fed her yesterday and she gobbled it up. :'( But I'm making sure its all milk based foods and I put finger foods on her plate first to see if she's in the mood. After getting very stressed about it last week i've done some reading and realised that when her reflux is this bad we have to just go with the flow - routine and good intentions go out the window, as long as she is comfortable. i'm hoping that once this tooth comes through we'll be back on track with BLW in no time!

I hope Sophie is feeling better.  Do try not to stress, you're exactly right, you just do what you can do.

Ok, so I told you all I would tell you how the sweet potato balls went once I'd tried them and I finally got around to it this morning.  I cooked the sweet potato, and blended it with pear (for constipation), a little formula, and some multi-grain baby cereal (I was going to use wheat breadcrumbs, but got nervous).  Then I rolled them in the baby cereal and put them in the fridge overnight.  I gave her one for breakfast and she seemed to like it.  It was a huge mess because it's squishy!  I think you could bake them though and I'm going to try that this afternoon.  I kind of the sweet potato chips or roasted sweet potatoes would be easier, though.

Sounds good!

Don't you find though when you roast things (like the chips) that it gets too hard for them on the outside to get to the middle where it is squidgy? We've still not got teeth yet so maybe it will get better! But Sophie stuggles with steamed veg, let alone roasted.

Lyn - I think you have to make a personal decision about wheat - depending on whether there's a risk of allergies in your family etc. Katie has lots of wheat-based stuff (bread, cereals, sugar-free biscuits, rusks, breadsticks...) as I eat a lot of bread and cereals. However I think some people hold off until 1 year if the parents are allergic to wheat.  It also seems to vary what you are advised depending on what country you live in - in the UK it's considered OK to give after 6 months.

Whoever suggested pesto (sorry - too lazy to read back to check!) it was a great idea.  I made some, and not only did Anna seem to like it (though she was too tired to eat much) but it turns out that I actually really like it too ... There must be something they add to the jars of the stuff that makes it (in my opinion!) horrid.

Sweet potato balls sound nice, but fiddly!  Have you tried steaming sweet potato chunks - it seems to be possible to get it so that it is nice and mushable in the mouth but not too squishy for the hand.  Once steamed, they keep fine in the fridge for a few days.

Hello, I'm back! ;D

Anyhow... Eryn is now well into toddlerhood and still on 4 milk feeds per day - so for all those mummy's experiencing peer/family pressure to drop feeds, do what's right for you and your los! Her milk intake is probably at about a pint per day (some bm some cow's), she has limited dairy from other sources, and still eats a tremendous amount of food on top of her milk.

Perhaps it would help you to think about balance of food groups rather than total quantities, this is really what's important in the longer term!

Re: wheat - I'm wheat-free altho the girls seem to be ok with it so far, the best wheat-free products we've found in the UK are Tesco's own FreeFrom range - their pasta spirals, naan bread, pitta bread are all good - for other items, Dietary Specials make a reasonable bread for toasting, but I've yet to buy a decent freash wheat-free loaf, so if I want one I make my own using Doves Farm gluten-free bread making flour in our bread maker, Dietary Specials also do some processed foods like pizza and pies etc but I wouldn't give these to the girls yet (my treat!) - Doves Farm also do gluten-free plain flour which makes good cakes if you sieve it lots of times and add a generous teaspoon of baking powder!

I suggested pesto - it's marvellous isn't it?

I just gave my LO grilled sweet potatoes last week.  I took off the outer grilled later (carcinogens and all) and gave her the inside.  It's perfect because it doesn't get too mushy.

That sounds good, Alissa.  I tried to flatten out those sweet potato balls and bake them and it just didn't work at all.  I think we'll be sticking with baked/steamed/grilled sweet potato chunks.
I did give her a sugar snap pea to chew on today from my salad, which she loved.  But she was getting real chunks off and then spitting them out and it made me a little nervous.  Now that she has two teeth, I'm going to have to rethink the uncooked foods I give her.

We also tried yogurt, which she liked but she was tired and started to cry after about 3-4 bites.
We do a revolving spoon "technique."  I put the yogurt on the spoon and hand it to her, while she's eating it I fill up another spoon, then when she's done with her first bite, we exchange spoons.  She is rather impatient to get more but also insists on feeding herself!

Hi Everyone!

I'm back after a crazy couple of weeks.

Lyn-about the wheat...I think if you've given it to M and she hasn't had any reactions, you don't need to worry.

Vicky-I'm glad (  ??? ) to hear that your LOs are still waking for night feeds. Inez is too and I'd like to stop, but she doesn't seem to get enough calories in during the day.

So many of us seem to be posting about things that we think or other people think we should be doing. But we also need to remember that we know our LOs best and we have to live with them, so it's important to be confident in our parenting and to remind ourselves that we know best for our babies!

Inez and Sylvie are doing well with the BLW. I do a modified approach in which I put food on their spoons but they want to grab the spoon and put it in their own mouths. They do pretty well at feeding themselves, I must say. They eat rice cakes, cheerios, broccoli, green beans, sweet potato fries (made kind of like yours, Alissa). When I say eat I mean suck. I also do some purees and rice cereal which I put on the spoon for them - peas, carrots, acorn squash. No fruits yet.

Actually not true, they have sucked on apples before and once Inez bit off a piece about as big as a nickel. I kind of freaked out b/c I was worried she was going to choke, so I grabbed it out of her mouth.

Lyn - you talked about your Ped saying no proteins b4 a certain age. I think even with individual peds that varies. Mine said we can start with all proteins except pork, shellfish and fish. So there you go. She also said nothing "cream" so no sour cream, ice cream or cream cheese b4 12 months.

She also says minimum of 20oz of "milk" per day and at least 1 T of cereal per day - I think b/c of the iron.

I think it's time to move the girls up to two meals per day. Vicky - since you have twins too, how do you find that works for you? I notice it can take over an hour to "feed" the girls.

I do the revolving spoon with the girls too. It works very well!

Green beans the same here - suck and bite pieces of that they spit out. It makes me so nervous! If I had to Heimlich them, by the time I get the stupid tray off and get them unstrapped from the chair I think they'll be goners!!! :o

Alice still suffering from this tummy bug.  Went to GP today and they took a stool sample, so we'll get the results of that on Mon/Tues.  I have been trying to keep up with the thread, but we've had to stop all solids until she's better.  She seemed to be doing better yesterday, but then she woke last night screaming and then pooed all over the place, really watery too.  So had a screaming pooey nappy change.

So will hopefully get her back on track once this bug has gone.  I've been told to stay away from solids until she's better, at least her milk intake yesterday and today has been good again.  She was taking between 160-100mls less over the whole day.  Can't be good for her weight gain.

Bye for now, am still reading.

Lu, thank you muchly, I hope she gets better quickly too.  We have the whole family visiting us next weekend for a Thanksgiving Service for her.  So it would be really great if she was feeling better by then, also it would be concerning if she was still poorly then.
