Poorly with tummy bug
« on: October 01, 2007, 18:08:52 pm »
The boys and I are all poorly.  It started at 3am this morning when Brynley was sick.  It required a complete change of clothes and sheets.  Then at 5am, the other end exploded requiring another complete change.

On waking, Kayden too had an extraordinarily awful nappy for me to contend with!  By then, I was also feeling sick and could barely manage to change the nappy without getting my own head over the toilet!

My sickness started at 11am and has been like clockwork every 2 hours since then.  Thankfully Ella has been ok... so far.

So what to do?   ???

I offered the boob every 2 hours but actually they only took anything at their normal feed times.  But at bedtime, I clearly didn't have enough milk to satisfy them (they ate hardly any solids today) so we had to top up with a bottle (they took 3 ounces each).  It's not surprising since I haven't eaten anything all day and any water I drink seems to find a way out straightaway too.

I really, really don't want this to affect my breastfeeding relationship, especially since I have felt under pressure to stop recently anyway.

Feeling sad as well as very sick.   :'(

{{{{hugs}}}}} and ~~~Healthy vibes~~~ for all!

Keep offering and pump when you can.  It is so normal for them to be off the food and breastmilk while sick (as you said you don't feel like eating/drinking much either).  Hopefully it will be a 24 hour bug and you'll be back to normal tomorrow.  :-*

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

You just have to remember this is going to be a short term thing - albeit a really horrid one. So even if for a few days you aren't able to feed as you would like when you feel better you can rehydrate and do some focused pumping and hopefully your supply will bounce back.
In the meantime I'd try and get some rehydrating solution for yourself - which sadly tastes disgusting.
Just rest and this hopefully won't last.
At least they are feeding which should keep you stimulated.

Breastfeeding women have always got ill - few escape it - and supply does bounce back. Whatever happens it is really really really unlikely to be permanent.

Look after yourself or ideally get someone else to! Really hope you feel better soon.

{{{HUGS}}} So sorry you're going through this!  :'(

Like the others said, stomach bugs tend to be short lived, so hopefully you'll start keeping stuff down fairly soon.  You can only do what you can do.  Focus on getting through the next few hrs!

I had a stomach bug when Megan was 2 months old and I remember how awful it was (and that was only 1 baby!!!).  Everytime I threw up, my milk would let down too....seemed like such a waste... :'(
