Flying with Food Allergies
« on: October 01, 2007, 19:00:36 pm »
Couple of questions for other mommy's who may have travelled with a food allergy child.

1)  Can the you do anything to get the airplane to not serve peanuts?  Carter is allergic to them, but I don't think inhalation, so I we should be ok, but of course it's be safest for no one to have them on the plane, thoughts?

2)  Did you have to take a cooler of food with you, or did you just grocery shop at your destination?  I use a special natural ckn that I cook and serve to him and would like not to have to do this while we're away, can I just pack in a cooler enough for the four days?

Any other tips or recommendations?
Thanks!

Steph - I am quite certain that if you notify the airline of the peanut allergy, they will not serve them on that flight.  As for the cooler, I would ask about that when you call on the peanuts.

I agree with previous post. Before my son developed a severe food aversion we travelled to Menorca from the UK and we made all his food there. We took safe snack foods aswell. On the plane he just had neocate formula as it was a night flight so did not need to feed him solids.

I called and they said they couldn't say they wouldn't serve peanuts,
how I don't think his allergy is inhalation :-\
I talked to the allergist and they said he should be ok, but make sure to have the epi-pen ready.
I have to go get a special note from teh allergist to say it's ok to have the epi-pen - sheesh!

As for the cooler, they said it was fine to have.  I'm hoping to bring most of his food for the long weekend,
which really doesn't take that much room!

Thanks for your advice!
