irregular naps - is that a problem
« on: October 10, 2007, 10:31:17 am »
Hello all,

My LO - 8 months old, seems to believe in irregular naps. Till a few days ago, he was napping about 3-4 hours in total thorugh the day, only at irregular times. And had just about started to sleep though the night, well sort off, but then last few days he just refuses to sleep, he gets very very tired, cranky but just won't sleep, I am totaly losing it now!

My questions:
1. Are irregular naps a problem. I try and follow his sleepy signs and let him nap when he is sleepy...but more often that not he does manage his 2-3 hrs of daytime sleep.
2. What do I do now that he refuses to sleep, tried soothing him, singing him, rocking him etc. Only thing that just abt works is taking him for a walk, but the moment you stop he wakes up again.

Please guide!
Thanks,
Mukta

I would def. do regular times for  naps for sure..... My dd is 7 months so not too far off of your baby. she naps at 8:30am and 12:30ish and catnap at 5ish. bedtime at 7ish.  Have you gotten the book "healthy sleep habits happy child" by Weissenbluth?? That is my bible and it is amazing. they have biological sleep states when it is easy for them to fall asleep and stay asleep at certain times of the day. they need you to help them with that. Have you always worked on naps or no?

I would use the clock to determine your baby's naps. with a bit of flexibility (15 min or so) I never had luck by watching signs. got too overtired if I did that. You may have to do some restructuring to make set nap times. get that book .... good luck!!!!!

My first DD I had to rock and calm down this dd I just put her in her crib and she puts herself to sleep on her own. totally different temperments and that determins what you have to do also.

Thanks, might try the book. But my DS has never been regular at anything, still won't sleep through the night etcetc. there are good weeks and bad weeks but nothing is permanant :D I have tried following the clock but he only gets agitated if he is not sleepy but put into bed.

He like to start his mantra cry and thats like the best sign of when he should be pout in bed. his sleepy sign make me back off and let him calm/play on his own and then the moment he starts his mantra cry i pop him into bed (with his pacifier) and off he goes to sleep.

i think its all relate to his night sleep, because based on how good or bad the night was he sleeps till later in the morning and everything is form there following a 2.5hr activity cycle...

hope this makes sense.
