Advice about egg allergy
« on: October 10, 2007, 20:36:31 pm »
Hi All

I'm not sure if my little guy has an allergy to egg, not sure what constitutes an allergy or a reaction, the HV wasn't really much help.  I tried him with a hard boiled egg as finger food for the first time about 1 week ago, he only really had a tiny bit as he didn't seem to like it and spat it out.  However, after a very short time he came up in blotches around his mouth and his lips appeared to become swollen.  In himself he seemed fine, he had a cold at the time so couldn't say if he developed a runny noise etc as he already had one!!!  I talked to the HV at his 8 month check a few days later and she didn't seem very concern, just suggested i tried him with some cake or yorkshire pudding to see if he has a reaction when egg is an ingredient.  I haven't tried him yet, just wanted to do a bit of research first.  she also briefly mentioned that his next injections maybe of concern if he does have an allergy...any advice, should i go to the GP and ask for him to be tested or should i just try him with it seeing he didn't have a severe reaction, however i did read somewhere that the more exposure they have the worse the allergy can become???  Any advice would be welcomed, thanks x

It definately sounds like your ds could have an egg allergy. To be honest I would be very careful about giving him products with egg in as the next exposure could be much worse. I assume it is the MMR that your ds is due next, my son had this injection in hospital due to his egg allergy and luckily it went ok. I would talk to your doctor about it and maybe see if you can have some allergy tests done and also ask for information regarding his next immunisation as this may need to be done in hospital.

hi Thanks, i suppose i was just feeling very uncomfortable giving him egg again, i just wanted to see if this was the normal advice
(although it didn't sound a good idea to me!) i have never had any allergy's, although i use to be a carer for a man with a severe nut allergy, so understand how careful you have to be.  i think i will go to see my GP and take it from there.  thanks for your support x  ;)
